Reverend William Erval Cleveland was born 20 Oct 1877 in Cleburne, Johnson Co, Texas. His parents were:

William Earl Cleveland[1] from South Carolina[2]
Caroline Teasley[1] from Georgia[2]

Does anyone recognize the parents? My prime suspects for the father are:

1. William Earles Cleveland b. 1827 in SC, d. ~1895 in TX

His first wife, Matilda L. Anderson, was born in Georgia. When he mustered[3] for the Civil War as a lieutenant, one of his sergeants was Pleasant Hollywell Teasley. Could William have remarried a Teasley girl when he moved to Texas after the war?

By the way, William and Matilda Cleveland had a son named William Cleveland b. 1849 in GA. This first child is enumerated in the 1850 Census[4] of Murray County, Georgia but is otherwise overlooked in genealogical indeces. Perhaps he died young.

2. William Earl Cleveland b. 1833 in GA

Wrong birth state, but his parents were both from South Carolina and married there in 1829. He married Sally Roarix. I haven't been able to place him in Texas.

3. William Eli Cleveland b. 1854 in SC, d. 1920 in TX

Wrong middle name. Spouse unknown.

As for the mother, I have zero suspects. All of the Caroline Teasleys that I've found were black, but William Erval Cleveland was white.

Rick, I'm sorry that I can't be of more help to you in finding your Reverend William Erval Cleveland was born 20 Oct 1877 in Cleburne, Johnson Co, Texas. Just in case the following would be of any help to you.......the message I received below in 2002 says that William Earles Cleveland and Matilda Ancerson had 3 more sons AFTER they moved to Texas, however, the only children I have listed for them were all born in Hart Co. GA. so I'm not help at all.

The following information was sent to me on February 15, 2002 by Schnurr200@aol.com:

William Earles Cleveland and Matilda Anderson moved to Galveston, Texas after the Civil War and had 3 sons.

William Earl Cleveland, Brother to Melvina Eliz. (George Col. - Nancy, William, Rev. John, John) was a Capt. E Co. 60th Ga. Regt. Inf. - enlisted 9/19/1861. Capt. Beck's Co. Bartow Avengers. This Co. consolidated with Col Stiles Regt. and served for year in Savannah, Ga. In June of 1862 60th became part of Lawton-Gordon-Evans Brigade the largest brigade in ANVA because of an extra Regt. This was an elite outfit and was sent to Va. in June of 1862 just prior to 7 days battles around Richmond. They became fourth brigade of Stonewall Jackson Division. They arrived by train at Staunton, Va. and were immediately turned around and marched to Richmond area.

First battle was at Gaines Mill, then Malvern Hill. Wm. E. was wounded Aug. 29 in 2nd battle of Manassas and sent to Richmond hosp. - rec'v 30 day furlough and was back with unit in early Nov. Wounded at Fredericksburg in Dec. 1862. Back with unit in 1863 in Jan. Served thru Chancellorsville although divi. was at Fredericksburg part of battle. Gettysburg, Monocacy, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor - in the valley campaign until battle of Winchester Sept. 19, 1864 where he was shot in left arm and left hip and left in enemy line.

First in U.S. field hosp. and then to West's Hosp. Baltimore, Md. to Ft. McHenry to Ft. Delaware - released June 19, 1865 on taking oath (biting the dog) walked home from Ft. Delaware - took him almost three months. When he got home there was no one there -- he finally found the family over in Hart Co. and went there. Incredible. ( I am Florida Division Registrar, UDC - and am saturated with CSA history) My grandfather had 8 brothers and all of them served in CSA units. (Vining)
He was first 3rd Lt. then 2nd and lst and Capt. in 1863.

As far as the mention of your:
2. William Earl Cleveland b. 1833 in GA...........he was the brother to my G Grandfather David Dumas Cleveland. I have him in Murry Co. GA in 1850 & 1860 and have him marrying Sarah (Sally) Rorax AFTER THE CIVIL WAR on 17 Oct 1867 in Murry Co. GA.........but have totally unable to find them in any census after that and don't know if they had children or not. I have a huge list of his militiary history but that's all.

I don't have any "Teasleys" listed in my Cleveland File

Sure sorry I can't be of more help.
Nell
