I received my three volumes of the Cleveland Genealogy from Higginson a couple of
weeks ago, but this is the first opportunity I have had to post about them. I was
*very* pleased with the quality of them. I did have to do some rearranging to make
room for them in my office, however, for they are *huge* volumes, each about the
size of an encyclopedia volume, maybe even thicker.
I haven't yet had time to study them as carefully as I want to, but here are some
content notes for those of you who have been waiting for that bit of information from
me.
Volume I/pages 1-1000
Volume II/pages 1001-2000
Volume III/pages 2001-2904
Table of Contents:
page 8: origin of the Cleveland Family; the ancient family seat Cleveland, North Riding,
County York, England; the antiquity, derivation, etymology, and orthography of the
surname Cleveland; Thorkil de Cliveland, of Cleveland 1066, the earliest Cleveland of
record; different Cleveland arms; the name a title in peerage; places and localities
named Cleveland.
page 23: Chapter One/Moses Cleveland of Woburn, Middlesex County, MA, and his
descendants.
page 2054: Chapter Two/Alexander Cleveland of Prince William County, VA, and his
descendants.
page 2223: Chapter Three/the earliest known Clevelands; Thorkil de Cliveland, the
Saxon, A.D. 1066, and descendants; William Cleiveland of Hinckley, Leicestershire,
England, and descendants; Clevelands in England; later Cleveland emigrants to
America; untraced Clevelands everywhere; list of some of the *useful members* of the
Cleveland family (a categorization I found rather amusing since we all like to think we
are useful in some way, right??? :)
page 2352: Chapter Four/bibliography of the Cleveland Family; a catalog of the
published works of authors of Cleveland ancestry; Cleveland characters in fiction; the
name Cleveland used for a pen name.
page 2415: Chapter Five/Edward Winn of Woburn, MA, and some account of his
descendants; ancient Wynnes and Winnes; other Winn emigrants to America.
pages 2451+: Appendix of memoranda received too late for proper classification;
corrigenda; index of persons; index to ancestries and genealogies; index of places.
I hope that brief overview will help you decide which volume(s) will be most helpful to
your research. Good luck!
Love and blessings,
Vikki L. Jeanne Cleveland
