I am also a descendant of Moses Cleveland who came from England to the U.S. in
about 1635 and settled in Wohun, Mass. My great great grandfather was James Peter
Cleveland who was born about 1830 in Canada, probably in Thorold or nearby. Here is a
copy of his obituary from the Thorold, Canada newspaper dated Dec. 12, 1911.
"James Peter Cleveland, on eof Lafayette's oldest residents, died November 25 at the
homed of his daughter, Mrs. Cornelius Carnahan, 1827 Schyler Ave, Lafayette, IN. Mr.
Cleveland had been ill since last March, and his demise is attributed to the infirmities of
age. He was born in Canada eighty years ago, and had lived in Lafayette for a number
of years. He was a miller by occupation, and was an industrious and honorable man.
Mr. Cleveland was a descendant of an historic family. Some 300 years ago Moses
Cleveland and his wife came from England to America and settled in Wohum, Mass.
From this couple descended an inumerable line. The city of Cleveland was named after
one, who was a wealthy iron merchant and ship owner. In 1852 on the second of
February, two brothers, Sylvenus and Stephen with their wives, arrived in Buffalo, New
York, having driven in sleigh all the way from New York City. At Greenbush, on the
banks of the Hudson, below Albany, the little party was delayed, as the wife of
Stephen gave birth to a child, necessitating a short stoppage. Only short, however,
and the little stranger was brought on, having narrowly escaped being British born.
They settled at what is now Thorold, and two years later were joined by a third
brother, Joshua, who was the father of our subject. The homestead is still standing on
Cleveland St. where James was born and where he resided until a few years ago when
he and his wife came to Lafayette to make their home with their daughter, Mrs.
Cornelius Carnahan. Mr. Cleveland is survived by a widow aged 77 years and the
following children: William Cleveland of Thorold, Ontario, Mrs. Jack Goodwin, Massilon,
Ohio, Frank Cleveland and Mrs. Cornelius Carnahan of this city. The funmeral will occur
tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o"clock from the Baptist Momes Memorial Chapel, Rev. A.
R. McKay, officiateing. Interment will be in Springvale Cemetery."
Between Moses Cleveland and James Peter Cleveland, I have a blank. Is this your line,
and can you be of help to me. Thank you. Gloria M. Ware
