Hello I am Evan Chaney of Detroit Michigan and the reason for this letter is as follows. For the last few years I have been trying to trace my Cleveland family roots that started in Oconee County , South Carolina , I went on rootweb.com com and found your contact information when I type the surname Cleveland . My Cleveland family begins with my 3rd great-grandfather Robert Cleveland who was born in abt 1845 in Pickens County and according to family history and tradition was the son of a slave woman (name unknown) and her master. Through my research I�ve learned that Robert�s mother was born in Virginia and his father was born in South Carolina as I stated above it has always been told that Robert�s father was the slave owner with that information I began to look through the Slave Schedule dated July 5th 1860 for the Pickens District searching for and slave owners with the surname Cleveland that owned a 15 year old male slave (my ancestor Robert would be that age in this year) and the only slave holder in Pickens was a man by the name of Osborne Brewer Cleveland and thought this has to be the father of my ancestor. A story was told to me once by my late cousin (who served as our family historian for many years) when his father Clinton (one of Robert�s son�s) that they were one day picking cotton, and my uncle Clinton asked why his father was being so nice to these white men and he (Robert) replied �it was because they were his brothers.� After coming across Osborne I searched him and came to find he was born in South Carolina and that his parents were Capt. Jeremiah Cleveland (born in NC the son of Rev. John Cleveland and Mary (Mollie) McCann) and Obedient Callaway (daughter of Rev. Francis Callaway and Sarah Brewer). I recently visited rootsweb and searched the surname Cleveland in SC. and found that you had done research on the Cleveland family from Jeremiah and John, and I was wondering if we could possibly be related or if you could help me in finding my other Cleveland family and ancestors. Robert Cleveland married Sarah Glenn and on July 9th, 1873 they conceived their first child Styles P. Cleveland (my great grandmother�s father and the oldest of their 12 children) and moved to Detroit in 1926 due to the bowevil tragedy that destroyed their land where he died in 1931. For years I have felt lost and out of place because I didn�t know anything about my family legacy, my request is that if possible please help me put the broken pieces back together and if you have any information on Osborne and his family that can help shed some light to please share with me.
