Thomas Calaway Cleveland's father was Benjamin Cleveland. Benjamin was a brother to my GGG Grandfather John Cleveland. Benjamin and John's father was Rev. John Cleveland. Rev John's father was John Cleveland. Then the trail goes back to Alexander Cleveland and then to the first Alexander Cleveland and then, according to family legend, to Oliver Cromwell. The first Alexander Cleveland was brother to Moses Cleveland for whom Cleveland Ohio was named. Cleveland Tenn. and Cleveland County NC was named for another Benjamin Cleveland. There is a good write-up on his life at the Cleveland Web Site.

If you run into trouble tracking back, let me know and I will try to help you

You can track the family on the following web page.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

My Great Great Grandfather was another Benjamin Cleveland. He was born Feb 12, 1792 in
Franklin, Ga. and died Jan 26, 1879 in Stewart Co., Ga. General Benjamin Cleveland, for
whom Cleveland, Georgia is named, was a hero of the War of 1812, fought with and
was a friend of Andrew Jackson. He was a planter, soldier, builder, and politician, was
elected to the Georgia legislature as a Republican for over 20 years and had extensive
land holdings in North Georgia. These included the Nacoochee Valley, near Helen,
Georgia, the Tallulah Gorge, and most of the land now covered by the waters of Lakes
Rabun and Burton in Rabun County. He lived for many years in Clarksville, Georgia.
General Ben led numerous campaigns against the indians in the southeast.

I married into the Cleveland family from Taylor Co. Georgia. William Robert Cleveland Jr. b:27 Sept 1944 in Upson Co. His father William Robert Cleveland b: about 1868. No,that was not a typo. William Robert Cleveland b:1868, was 76 years old in 1944 when this son was born. I am going to Taylor Co. soon to learn more about the father of William Robert Senior, but from what I have found via internet is that there was a Washington Cromwell Cleveland b:1803 living in Crawford County around 1878-1886. Also a William Cleveland b:8 Apr 1766 in VA who married in Franklin Co. GA, moved to Jasper Co. then settled in Crawford Co. GA . He was a revolutionary war soldier and is buried in Crawford Co. His parents are said to be Jacob Cleveland b:1729 in Culpeper County VA. Mother Mildred White b:1729 in NY, or maybe Caroline VA. Will write more later.
