The problem with the Australian comic industry is not so much a lack of talent, but a lack of publishers who are willing to publish a comic book.

One significant difference between Australian and American commercial culture is that, in general, Americans are willing to give virtually anything a go. Australians are far more reserved -- at times, too reserved. The advantage of our reservation is that we don't waste our time and money inventing a lot of crap, but the disadvantage is that a lot of Australian talent ends up overseas because so few people are willing to give them a chance here. The Black Box flight recorder is an example of something invented by an Australian but done overseas because nobody here would give him a chance. George Lucas had a hard time selling his first Star Wars script to movie studios -- it's well known that most of the major studios rejected him. Had he'd been Australian, I doubt if Star Wars would have ever been made. Still, at least we don't produce crap like the Home Alone movies...

One of the few exceptions to this rule would be the Australian film industry -- actors like Matt Damon were celebrities here long before he appeared in The Matrix and SW Episode II. Ditto Russell Crowe. Unfortunately, the comic book industry (or lack of one) is not one of these exceptions. :-(

Still, I'm intending on organising a fan-made exclusive comic for OzFormers 2003. From what I've been told, the current comic ban should not affect the convention. *keeps transistors crossed*
