That's essentially what happened in Beast Machines, really -- both sides considered themselves to be righteous.

Commercially, it didn't work, and I don't think a G1-based line/story like that would be too popular because the fact is that the majority of TF consumers are kids who like to see one thing -- violence. And don't forget, most children are still at the stage where they can only process concrete though processes -- to them, things are seen in black and white.

e.g.: if you asked a panel of children from different age groups if stealing a loaf of bread to feed your starving family is right or wrong, the younger children would be more inclined to immediately say that it's wrong, because stealing is wrong. Older children would begin to ponder about it.

Although Transformers does owe a lot to fans, it should still be primarily targetted at the kids as they are still the demographic majority. I'm not saying that's an excuse for Hasbro to utterly ignore fans, but I see no reason why the line should become fan-driven.

And fans are so damn-fickle anyway. Take me for example. :p
