Diaclone's got nothing to do with it. After all, non-Diaclone based Transformers such as Megatron and Hot Rodimus were also assigned with numbers too. The fact is that Transformers started in Japan in 1985, one year after it started in the West. Hence Transformers Year One in Japan = Transformers Year Two here, therefore both seasons one and two of the US cartoon was merged into a single series and both the first and second year (by our reckoning) toys were released together during the first year in Japan.
