Hi,
I thought I'd share some interesting things that I learned about while volunteering at the Almanzo Wilder Farm this summer.
1)James Wilder (Almanzo's father) was married twice. Angeline (Almanzo's mother) was his second marriage. His first wife died after only about a year of marriage. There were no children in this marriage.
2)It wasn't Eliza Jane that Almanzo threw the blackening brush at, it was actually Alice. It is believed that the publishers wanted to make Eliza Jane the "bad guy" in the book so they had had Eliza Jane's name replace Alice. If you read the manuscript for Farmer Boy Alice is the one that Almanzo threw the brush at.
3)I think most of you know that Almanzo had an older sister named Laura that wasn't mentioned in the book. She would have been about 18-19 years old at the time that Farmer Boy took place. She wasn't mentioned in the book because it was worried that the readers (the books were written for children) would get confused between Laura the author and Laura the character.
4)The teacher that beat the bullies actually was friends with the teacher that died because of the bullies beatings on him. This teacher actually took the job to get revenge for his friend's death. This part is in the original manuscript but got taken out for the version that we read. After he beat the bullies, he finished the semester and then left.
Well, that's all I can think of for right now, I hope you enjoyed it. I'd like to hear if anyone knows any other tidbits about any of the other books or in the lives of the Ingalls and Wilders.
