My son is 8 and has struggled with reading, spelling, and math since first grade. I knew he learned differently from the time he was kindergarten by the way he memorized the order of his sight words instead of the words themselves. I asked teacher after teacher if they thought he might have a learning disability with no response except that he was basically lazy or it was just his personality. This year we have a wonderful teacher who is a great advocate for my son. My advice is trust your instincts, teachers are often overwhelmed and don't have the time or resources to devote to children who are falling behind. In most states the school is required to test your child for a learning disability if you request it, but make sure you request it in writing. You can also have your child tested independently, I went through the IDA website to find someone, though it can be expensive. Be aware, many students who are diagnosed as dyslexic still don't qualify for services in public school. I am still fighting with our school district to provide services and have hired a special education teacher to tutor him in the meantime.
