Marisa,

Good to hear of your interest in practicing in Washington state.

Washington State has fairly good freedom of choice laws concerning health-care providers. Chiropractors are considered portal of entry providers and require no referral for insurance purposes. (Some exceptions occur in HMO limited programs but this is a very small percentage of covered lives).

Our workers comp program (Washington state Department of Labor & Industries) considers chiropractors as attending physicians for conditions within the scope of chiropractic. Chiropractors can be certified as independent medical examiners for their program as well.

Personal-injury is a fairly straightforward arena as well. Naturally, as anywhere else, you must undergo the scrutiny of claims examiners but as long as you are services are within reason they should be no problem getting paid for your work.

General health insurance coverage may have some limitations for new doctor in the area. The problem being that a number of the provider panels are currently closed. But, fortunately not all companies have close panels.

You should be aware of the limitations as to scope of practice in Washington state. Naturally, we can bill for 98040, 98041 etc and extremities (98043) as well as neuromuscular reeducation the use of heat ice therapy as well. He cannot bill nor performed electro modality physical therapy services. Radiology is OK, and so are some other testing modalities such as SEMG, ROM etc.

Hope this is helpful

Warmest regards,

Ken Shotwell, DC
