A girl of sixteen winters, wearing a plain brown homespun dress and a leather knapsack on her back, steps down from an old rented carriage. A scarf tied neatly over her head does not hide her very curly, very long and very, very flaming red hair. Her hazel eyes sparkle with the excitement of being in a new place. Cheerily she thanks the driver and walks over to the tired bay horses pulling the carriage. "Goodbye, Malark. Goodbye, Shyna," she whispers to them, kissing each on the nose in their turn. With a final scratch on each of the horses' favorite spots, she walks away into a new life.
