Author: Kyrste
Subject: Her running feet guide her to the square

Kyrste's feet take her to Kilworth Square, without her even knowing really where she was going. Her eyes flash around, glancing from people to sky to shops, face as white as death. Her whole body shakes with fear.
Then she hears a commotion behind her. She turns to see a huge stallion, black all over except for a brown nose and a small white star, rearing and fighting the people gathering around him with ropes raised. His long mane and banner tail seem to sweep the sky. Hooves lashing, neck extending to bite, ears pinned flat and lost in his mane, eyes flashing fire, he battles them off a short distance, then suddenly charges. To everyone's surprise he does not trample them flat, but leaps, a sky-high, soaring leap, hurtling over their heads and landing cleanly. Then the stallion slows and trots up and halts before the astonished Kyrste.
She places her hands on his nose, because she wants to talk to him, and to talk to horses she must be touching them. Just as she is about to ask why he is angry, why he chose her, what he is running from, as she was running from-
Then, as she goes into the trance where she and the horse are the same and speak the same language, there is a loud rushing similar to the roar of a waterfall that fills her mind, and a thick blinding whiteness, along with a loud, evil, inhuman laughter. Then all clears, but the trance-place is still filled with a foggy white light.
Then the horse speaks.
I am called Kestrel, he says in a voice like a bell. And I can guess you know why I have come to you.
Yes, Kyrste says shakily. You have come for evil, haven't you? Stay away! I am not Kyrstellyn- you have come to the wrong person!
He shakes his head. No, I know you are young Kyrstellyn, he replies. And so does- he leaves off the name- as you could probably tell. He nods at the surrounding white light and they both recall the laughter and the rushing sound. And I have come for good. I have come to help you. I know what to do.
What must I do? Says Kyrste, quietly, almost in tears for dread and fright.
Get on my back. I will take you there.
Then Kyrste comes out of the trance and wonders how on earth she is going to get on Kestrel's high back. Then he lowers himself to his knees. Kyrste reluctantly climbs on, gripping his mane. Reluctant to face her fate.
Then Kestrel rises and springs into a gallop, so fast that there is no room for anything but hanging on.
