Subject: The Chinese Orphan...

She felt as though her legs would want to break off her body with nervousness. She stood in the middle of the town sqaure. People didn’t pass her a look; not knowing there was a stranger in Kilworth Square. The Chinese orphan, Annie Jeng, looked 16 with dark brown almond eyes that stands out of her faint complexion, black hair that was held in a bun with chopsticks. She only wore a faded red worn-out calico frock and worn shabby loafers that was given to her when she stopped by houses along the dirt road. She begged for work and a place to sleep everywhere she went. Some were nice and gave her some stale bread and water, in trade for work such as cleaning out the manure in chicken coop or stables. Others though gave her a good boot back to the dirt road. The only belongings she carried was a hollowed branch of wood which was proclaimed as a fife, an ancient fan that was tucked away in her sash, a silver band around her finger. She looked at Kilworth Square, hoping for an opportunity to make something of her life.
