Anclaire rides in 'pon her new mount, Topaz. The tiny, winged wolf pup by the name on Joslyn sits on the girls lap, fast asleep. Anclaire rides slow, still in shock, clutching the letter. She comes up to the fountian and dismounts. She holds Topaz's lead and puts Joslyn on the ground beside her. She unfolds the letter and reads it again.


Dearest Anclaire,

We have some very unfortunate news for you. A large pack of bandits invaded our village last week. There were hundreds of them, all with swords or other weapons. Obviously, Adon went out to try and fight them, but a bandit stabbed him in the back. He lives for about a half hour. I don't think I need to tell you, but just in case: Your dearest Adon is now deep in the soil of the graveyard. We are so sorry. We know you were planning to get married. Maybe you can find another lover in Kavanagh? We at home know this must be very hard for you, we want you to know we are there for you. You may come home if you wish...
