2002 Miss Lewis County Pageant

W.F. West High School, Chehalis

November 3, 2001

Nicole Brener-Schmitz, an 18-year-old senior at Centralia High School, was crowned Miss Lewis County 2002 on November 3 at W.F. West High School in Chehalis. Nicole is the fortieth consecutive Miss Lewis County and the theme of the pageant was Reminiscing in celebration of the four decades of pageantry. Returning to the stage where she was selected Miss Lewis County 1998 was Breann Parriott, the reigning Miss Washington 2001. The only other Miss Lewis County to win the Miss Washington title was Sandra Marth Hill, of Centralia, in 1966. She went on to fame and fortune as the co-host of Good Morning America with David Hartman in the eighties.

Nicole received a $1,800 scholarship as well as the opportunity to represent Lewis County next June at the 2002 Miss Washington Pageant in Tacoma. In the talent competition, Nicole performed a ballet en Pointe to Spanish Variation from Swan Lake. This was not her first experience in the pageant. In 1998, she participated in a performance by the Southwest Washington Dance Center on pageant night. Her platform was youth volunteerism.

The first runner-up was Autumn Sheldon, 21, an Evergreen State College student from Centralia who was awarded a $900 scholarship. Autumn performed an original monologue she wrote about the importance of community involvement, in light of September 11.

Miss Congeniality and the recipient of a $300 scholarship from the Morton Loggers Jubilee was Erika Molina, 19, of Winlock. The talent award for $150 went to Katie Keller, 19, of Winlock. Nicole Brener-Schmitz was the recipient of the $500 Community Service Award and Shannon Walker, 18, of Napavine was given the Staff Award. Molina, Keller and Walker also received $300 non-finalist scholarships from the pageant.

Outgoing Miss Lewis County 2001, Annie Franklin, performed You Can’t Get a Man With a Gun from Annie Get Your Gun, the number that she sang last year when she won the title. Miss Washington 2001, Breann Parriott danced her Miss America talent, a ballet to a medley from West Side Story.

Marking his twentieth, and last year, with the Miss Lewis County Pageant was emcee Rick Stockdale. Co-emcee Shawn Owens Peters, Miss Lewis County 1986, presented Rick with a miniature tiara in honor of his twenty years of pageantry. For several years, Rick also co-emceed the Miss Washington Pageant when it was held in Vancouver.

The judges were Nancy Karr Backus, Terri Plante-Dowell, Mike Hamilton, Dennis Hill and Claudia Self.

The Executive Director of the Miss Lewis County Pageant, Tana Ingle, resigned shortly after this year’s pageant. The new Executive Director is Mary Knutson. For further information, please contact Mary Knutson at 360-736-8097 or misslewiscountywa@yahoo.com.
