2002 Miss Tri-Cities Pageant

Art Feller Auditorium

Kennewick High School

July 21, 2001

The theme of the 2002 Miss Tri-Cities Pageant might as well have been Sister Act since Amanda Beer, 18, the younger sister of outgoing Miss Tri-Cities 2000-2001, Laura Beers, was crowned Miss Tri-Cities 2001-2002. “It’s the biggest honor I could ask for, to be crowned by my sister,” said Amanda who was also awarded a $4,000 scholarship, a $1,500 wardrobe and more than $2,000 in other gifts. And if that wasn’t enough of a family affair, Laura’s boyfriend, Josh Pasma, 22, a Whitworth College senior from Kennewick, took the opportunity during Laura’s farewell to propose marriage. To the delight of the audience, Laura said yes.

Amanda is a 2001 graduate of Richland High School, now attending Columbia Basin College as an elementary music education major. In the talent competition, she performed a classical piano piece, Sonata, Opus 32 No. 2, The Tempest Movement No. 3 by Beethoven. Her platform - encouraging people with hearing loss – is near and dear to Amanda because she was born with a 50 percent hearing loss.

Eleven contestants competed in the 2002 pageant, An Evening of Intrigue, emceed by Miss America 1987, Kellye Cash Shepherd of Tennessee and Richard Rogers.
