From a post started by AesSedai on UO Hall

I participated in some large(ish) scale events within the last 48 hours (e5). I had a blast. I was able to run whenever I felt like it (for the most part), while I saw several people that looked like they forgot how to walk (it was fun 'protecting' them). Granted, I did lag up at times, but this was by far the most lag free large scale event for me yet. Sure, I'm lucky & have a cable modem, but I think we can all benefit from these actions:

1. This is the LagSaver for me:

Write UO macros & use them!

There are 4 macros you must use if you want to be as lag free as possible:

MinUpdateRange - ALT- 0
DecreaseUpdateRange - ALT- -
IncreaseUpdateRange - ALT- =
MaxUpdateRange - ALT- Backspace

Use whatever you want, but I used the ALT + key combo for mine, because it's easy to remember (0,-,+,Bspace).

These will do as stated: minimize, decrease, increase, and maximize the size of a window within your gameplay window.

When you adjust the 'Range', you are adjusting the amount of information that must be sent to your modem and processed by your computer. Less info. needed = less lag.

Example: When dead in a high traffic area, I can push ALT-0 and shrink to the smallest Range. Then I can zip through all but the toughest of lag monsters (*coughs* Orc Brutes), running as fast as I've ever ran before. Basically I use ALT-Bspace (MaxRange) the majority of the time. But once I've chosen a target, I will ALT-- (DecreaseRange) and move in. Once I'm on top of my prey, I will ALT-- some more. And lastly, if I find myself slowing to a crawl, I use ALT-0.

Sure it promotes tunnel vision and all. But that's not soo bad, is it? Just remember ALT-0 (MinRange) is kind of a last resort. But not seeing anything around you is a lot better imo, then being lagged and seeing grey as soon as you can move again. Also, remember that in Trammel you can plow through stuff. So, even if you can't see in front of you, as long as you move fast enough whatever you can't see won't hurt you anyway.

(I also use the ToggleRangeColor or DisableRangeColor to make the are outside of my 'Range' window grey; It's easier for me to see grey when it's not being updated as compared to color..)

2. Be aware that other programs, especially online ones (ICQ, IE/Stratics), just feed the lag monster. If it's getting laggy, might wanna X out of some programs.

---

There are many other things you can do to try to cope with the lag monster. Hopefully you all can continue to suggest them in this thread. All I want to do here is allow perhaps 1 more person to enjoy these events from a mostly lag-less perspective. So, let's hear all the super lag-saving idears.

edit: Let's try to keep this post free of criticism, laments, and complaints. But by all means, if you have a positive addition to help the community cope w/lag, let us know.

And this added by Berke in the same thread...

Some more things that I found helped lag:

Basically, you want to cut down on the info being sent to your client. That's what the range thing Aes Sedai talked about does.

Another way to do it is to turn off "Show Incoming Player Names"... A player or monster's name will now only show if you put your mouse cursor over them. This helped me a lot.

During the height of the battle, when dozens upon dozens of monsters and players had fallen, I found corpse names became a problem too. I use UO Autoassist, and I found in these times turning off "Auto Show Corpse names" helps. It is under the Left-most tab (named common) I think.

Hope this helps a few. Most people who turned off incoming names noticed significant differences for the better. :-)
