Subject: Message To All Fans/Next Tour

This has been posted on the newsgroups and e-mail lists that I check regularly, thought I'd post it on here. I think it's a great idea. The letter was written by Phil Romans.

here it is ...
---------------

Hello,

We'd like to introduce you to a new idea we hope will help bring the online U2 fan community together for the band's next tour. Whether you read one mailing list or five, whether you read the newsgroups or maintain a U2-related web site, we invite you to take part in this idea! In the end, we are all U2 fans and this is a full-fledged effort to pull all these different worlds together.

What we hope to do is coordinate things such as ticket buying and trading, fan gatherings, on-the-road lodging help, tape trading, and much more. With the support of both worldwide and smaller mailing lists, of web sites large and small, and the two newsgroups, we can make it possible for ALL U2 fans to enjoy the benefits and assistance of a united community of fans.

We are trying, in essence, to develop two things in relation to the next tour:
1. a greater sense of community, and
2. a centralized information bank of all U2-related happenings

1. Community: we are trying to go beyond the idea that you need "tags" to belong, or that you have to know someone important to get good seats. Can you imagine being a non-Internet fan seeing eight different groups of people running around a concert with different combinations of tags, hats, shirts, banners, or whatever? We believe that the music is beyond that, just like Bono says, "there are no
flags...."

As you may know, many fans took advantage of "Wire tags" during PopMart to help identify their online friends in the crowds at U2 shows. These tags were, by all accounts, a huge success. We are asking all mailing list moderators to support the idea of a common tag instead of developing individual tags for each of the several dozen U2 fan mailing lists. (Rest assured you will be able to personalize your tag to announce what lists you read, or what web sites you support.) We have already been in touch with Angie Inboden,
who created the "Wire tags" of PopMart two years ago, and Angie has expressed her support of the idea of a common tag. In addition, the moderators of mailing lists such as "Wire", "Exit", "Tomorrow", and "DC-List" have expressed their support of a common tag, as well.

2. Information bank: the webmasters of (in alphabetical order!) @U2, Followers of U2, Interference.com, U2.org, U2 Fan Database, U2 Station, The U2 Zone, and Zoonation have agreed to coordinate efforts to develop a single website where ALL tour-related news and information will be found. We expect to include information on tour dates, ticket buying-selling-trading between fans, fan gatherings
from various mailing lists, lodging assistance/City Guide info. and much more.

We are ready to hear from mailing list moderators who want to join this effort by supporting a single tag for all fans of any mailing list. Please email me, Phil Romans, at to be put on the list for future updates.

As the web site project develops further, we will invite other webmasters to show their support for that part of the project, as well.

If you are interested in joining this effort to enjoy U2 beyond borders, lists, web pages, etc., then keep an eye out for updates.
Let's all become fans again.
