Our past.
The arrival of the Twins has forced us to confront a past we wished to forget. You need to know who we were as surely as you know who we are.
If, after hearing our tale you can still love us then we shall be happy beyond measure.
If you cannot, we will understand.

Re: A Walk In The Moonlight -- The Nestene Consciousness, 14:18:59 06/15/01 Fri [1]
(Taking their cue from her silence, The Nestene begin...)
We were born in the universe before this one. A realm where magic was science and chaos stood as reason. We were one of many powerful and utterly alien entities whose exsistence is doubted by many and know only to a few whom this world calls mad.
Our realm died in the event which formed your universe. But we did not. Possessed of abilities and powers beyond even the gods themselves, we,and our siblings survived. We tread through your cosmos the undisputed lords of all. Worshipped as gods by primative races and feared by the most advanced races and even the gods an unimaginable Great War broke out.
It raged for millenia, entire galaxies were destroyed by us, countless lives lost, and no one could stop us.
At that time we...I was Shub Niggurath, one of the Great Old Ones. Yes, one of them. One of those terrifying beings whose very exsistence could mean the doom of all reality. One of those beings whose very name has become a word for pure evil.
But one of the greatest of us, Xy, was tricked into becoming the god of light, Thoth. With his wisdom and the powers of every god in the megaverse we were finally brought low. Enchanted and imprisoned in a realm beyond elder stars. Yog Sothoth, Great Cthulhu, Glaaki, Yig... all of us, including Shub Niggurath, imprisoned forever.
But Shub, was not so easily captured. Realizing the end was near I tore my sheer power and consciousness from my body and set it adrift in the cosmos. My body lay imprisoned, but my mind was free - albeit helpless.
A millenia passed and we exsisted as formless energy and pure thought. In time we became the being called The Nestene, and began a new age of conquest. Our success ame quickly and it seemed nothing could stop us.
Then we came to a small, blue world in a largely insignificant arm of the Milky Way. A hopelessly primitive species, homo sapiens, were our only obstacle to conquering this world. In our arrogance we descended on Earth, twice, and were defeated both times.
Defeat... by humans! The idea was laughable, we The Nestene..who was Shub Niggurath, The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young, one of the Great Old Ones...defeated by humans!
Yet, it happened. We thought long and hard upon it and decided evolution was the key. We had not changed in a thousand millenia, we believed we were the pinnacle of life. But obviously we were wrong. We needed to understand humanity to evolve into a higher being. So, we began to study humanity.
And we began to change. No longer did we hate lesser beings. No longer was the chaos of destruction our only joy. We began to understand the true depth of the evil we commited and both Shub Niggurath and The Nestene.
And we were ashamed.
We were determined to overcome our past. Let Shub Niggurath's body rot with the other Old Ones. The Nestene would forge a new destiny... we would evolve to a higher being and, like Thoth, make amends with the universe for all we had done.
And so, here we stand before you. The Nestene, your friend, your comrade in arms and your lover, who was once the Great Old One, Shub Niggurath.
Now, you have heard the truth.

*By the time Nestene is finished Sara can hardly stand on her own legs, so week with fear, horror, and shock. She tries to take a step away from her lover and falls to the sand. All her strength is drained from her. All that Sara can do is stare at Nestene.*

(Though the Nestene's first impulse is to reach out to Sara, to offer some comfort, they do not, knowing the fear in her eyes says anything they do will be little comfort to her. In shame and despair they bow their head.)
We see. Perhaps it would be best if we left you alone.
(slowly they turn) Perhaps it would be best if we left all of you and returned to our body, in eternal imprisonment.

Re: A Walk In The Moonlight -- The Nestene Consciousness, 15:37:48 06/15/01 Fri [1]
You have nothing to apologize for Sara. We deceived you, we kept our true identity hidden from you because we knew this reaction would happen.
But we cannot bear to see that look of fear in your eyes. The knowledge that it is us who terrified you so. Its ironic, you know, a billenia ago we exsisted only for the sheer pleasure of the fear of a multitude of races on an uncountable number of worlds.
((OOC) Err, looking at the modify/approve screen this message is going to come out real small. But we don't know how to fix it.)
Now, to see fear in your eyes, the eyes of the sweetest, gentlest being we have ever known, tears our very soul apart.
