"Sir?"

El'Jarrun was long gone noted Walter, who simply put the earpiece away now. His thoughts had been elsewhere, distracted by the sweet vanilla scent of Kathryn's perfume. The gorgeous clerk had dropped off a hard copy of some of the files requested from archives, and as always greeted Walter cheerfully. And as always, his reply had been a barely audible "thanks," with little or no eye contact. He felt she remained there a moment after handing him the papers, but when he looked up she was already heading back to the library, her strawberry-blonde pony tail bouncing optimistically.

Walter mused over how no matter how she wore her hair--up, down, in a ponytail--it always looked phenomenal. His mind began to envision unlikely events, like some universal menace like the Electriad bursting in and grabbing her. He cast himself as the hero of course who rescued the grateful damsel with ease. He thought of more mundane, realistic ways to gain her favor too, like changing a fuel cell on her cruiser or helping fix a glitch on her computer. Then he remembered she was a few years older than he and a lot savvier; she could probably fix her own cruiser(Walt didn't even have a flying permit yet) and probably show him a thing or two on his computer. Also, while the station was paying for his quarters, bunks which he shared with several others in the brig crew, she had saved enough to have her own living space. Walt sighed and realized he had to

"Stop dreaming, 'Walter Mitty'!"

Walter's glasses nearly went flying as the other officer slapped him on the back. He hated when Dupont did that to him.

"That's not my last name."

"What's that, 'Walter Mitty'? Gotta speak up man; can't hear you.
Listen, you're a good kid..."
(Kid? Walter was actually a few months older...) "...so here's some free advice.

You wan't something, you go for it. Don't be a loser your whole life. Because if you don't make a move soon...

Someone else just might."

Dupont slapped Walter painfully on the shoulder once more before sauntering down the hall.

"Take it easy, 'Walter Mitty'..."

Walt buried his head in his hands and rubbed his eyes. Pushing thoughts of Sal Dupont and Kathryn from his mind, he began thinking of his unfinished holonovel he worked on in his spare time. It wasn't long before he was staring at his desk blankly while in his mind he was the protagonist of his story, and working out out to finish his latest chapter from the inside...
