I would be disagreeing with you, Nick- I think that the drug tests are a bad idea if only for the fact that they represent a massive lack of trust between parent and child. If, in the situation you describe, it were my child doing drugs, I would like to believe that they could tell me straight if I asked. Remember that scene in American Beauty when the father made his son take the pee test? Well, that, and a number of other references to domestic abnormality, helped to build up the image of a wholly unnatural family. The point being that a lack of trust would only help to further relations between parent and child- one of the reasons I know that I started to experiment with drugs in the first place being the shit domestic situation.
It is true, however, that drug taking is a form of escapism for most. You are very lucky to have a life so good that you don't need a form of escapism- for the rest of us, we need to get away sometimes- for some this is experimenting with drugs.
Don't get me wrong, I am not condoning drugs- they fucked me over really badly. I have a good mate who was in hospital after a bad acid trip.
Sorry this msg isn't so happy, Caz! I guess I just wanted to put anoher opinion into the forum...!!
Nickerz xx
