We use a block schedule at my school, so I have the students for 90 minutes. Usually the first week is chaotic with many announcements and grade meetings. I try to keep my rules and procedures VERY short. I have about 3 rules-- treat people with respect, don't interfere with others learning... hmmm maybe I have 2 rules :-) I tell them that I enforce all the school's rules (tardies etc). We read over my one sheet long course description. I get their names/addresses and "What they want to learn" on a 3X5 card. Then I teach something. A short story that is funny is a good place to start. I try to have a little unit that will last a week and absorb all the interruptions, etc.

Good luck.
