My mom's a news addict, and she's said that she's seen pretty much the same thing on many occasions: Bush performs okay with the pre-written speeches, but as soon as he has to come up with stuff himself he fucks it up somehow, and then his staff takes him away and sends out the press secretary-types to clean up the mess.

Ever noticed that they don't let him give press conferences anymore unless it's unavoidable? They send out whatzisname (is it Fleischer?) to tell everyone what "the President said" and "the President feels" and such.

foo. Don't get me started....
