There are some twists here. I've talked to some of the people involved here (a little) and for some years I apid some attention to the scene, but I've never heard of this suicide story. Here's how I remember it.

Varg "Count Grishnak" Vikernes later stabbed Aarseth to death for some unimportant reason, a small debt or something if I'm not mistaken. He was interviewed from jail about killing his friend for EVIL fun, and that sparked a period of half a year where just about every person who were into black or death music were cited in the newspapers. Most of them lied as best they could about satanistic rituals where virgins were raped and infants sacrificed, and this this way media involuntarily ran an effective advertising campaign for satanism (not unlike the "DANGEROUS SEX-DRUG!" headlines that started the Ecstacy fad). And that's when the burning of churches really got popular. And I reckon this is when the suicide story appeared.
