Here's my single-layer version of it.

The first two hours of the movie is a dream, the last twenty minutes is real. Diane is a wannabe actress who is on the edge of realising that she's not good enough to make a break in Hollywood. Her mistress, Camilla, is sleeping her way to the top, and apart from breaking up, she enjoys rubbing her success into Diane's open wound. Diane can't take that realisation, and she kills herself over it in the end.

But in the meantime she denies this to herself, and imagines a perfect version of herself (Betty): extremely talented, brave, kind, and destined for success. Camilla (Dream version: Rita) is totally dependent on her, and they become perfect lovers. Diane imagines how she would like Camilla to react to her imminent death. In the Club Silencio she admits to herself that this is all an illusion.

Awake, she thinks back, finds the key on her table and knows that she has put a price on Camilla's head, and that she is dead. Tormented by guilt (the old couple) and knowing her career will never take off, she kills herself.

But this version leaves out a lot. Questions:
-What's with everything around Winky's? Who's Dan and the guy, and what's with the dirty nightmare guy behind Winky's?
-Why are there two Camillas?
-Who's the cowboy? What does he symbolise?
-What's the box? Are the two keys the same key (both are blue)? Does the triangular dream key hint to something about the love triange of Diane/Camilla/Adam?
-What's the book that the hitman steals? Ed's list? "The history of the world in phone numbers"?
-Why the whole story about Adam?
-Is the movie chronological? How to explain the following time twist: the hitman already has Ed's list when Diane gives him the money to kill Diane, although he takes that list when he's talking about the car accident (that I interpret spoils the murder on Camilla that Diane is about to stage)? And how come "Rita" has that money at some point?

Alternatively, tell me your version of the whole mess.

Anybody who claims they understood the movie the first time they saw it: I will take a plane over to your contintent, find out where you live and kick your ass over to Norway. Then I will travel back home and continue kicking it there.
