Mariah said nothing. Letting it sink into her head, she kept silent. Chase didn't need to be stressing himself like this. She chewed on her lip for a moment, before reining October into a walk and out from the willow tree.

When they got out from the curtain of leaves, Mariah nudged October into a trot. She sat deep on the stallion's back, balancing herself to his gait. Finally, she broke the silence. "Chase," she said, her tone weak, "you don't need to be stressing yourself like that. I don't want you breaking your back and bending over backwards for a baby that doesn't have a father, or the mother that is a damn whore." She lowered her head, disgusted with herself. "Maybe I should have let him kill me," she muttered.

Chester went to Texas Tornado's stall. "Okay, buster," he muttered, "I got something to do, and you are going to work with me, understand?" He grabbed the stallion's bridle, and tacked him up. He looked at Jackie, and asked, "You riding along with me or not?"
