Mike finished his barn chores up early. Nervously, he walked slowly to his truck, taking in deep breaths as he went. "Calm down, Mikey," he whispered to himself. He had never been so nervous in his life. Digging under the clean and freshly vacuumed seats, he found what he was looking for. He pulled out a small, deep navy blue box. The covering was soft and velvety. He smiled softly, and pushed the lid open. Inside was about half of his life savings since the day he turned 13. Sunlight caught in the smooth, crystal clear diamond ring, giving a glittery twinkle. Mike's smile widened, and he closed it gently.

Maybe I shoulda taken a shower, he thought as he shut the truck door. Dirty from the day's work, his face and arms were streaked with dirt, as was his saggy pair of cut up blue jeans. He slipped the box in his pocket, wondering what she would say. He had had such confidence this morning, strange as it may sound, practicing what he planned to say over and over again in front of the mirror. Mike gave a deep sigh, and walked into the barn. He searched the aisles, and then spotted Melissa.

October leaned his head out of his stall door. The horse Mike just needed to see. Mike rubbed October's forehead as he watched Melissa. His heart swelled with joy and love at her presence. "Things have seemed to be a bit brighter in my life since I found Melissa," he said, unaware he was talking to a horse that just as well could understand.

No kidding. Mariah thinks the same thing about Chase, even though she don't let it show, he whickered softly. Oh, why do I bother trying to tell you humans anything? You don't understand the horse language!

Mike continued to stroke October's dished face. "What if she says no? What if she thinks I'm stupid or foolish? What if-"

October interrupted him with a hard bump with his nose. Shut up and go on! he snorted. She won't turn you down. Its easy, Mikey. You just go up to her and ask her hoof, uh hand, in marriage. Not hard! Now go on!

Mike frowned at the dappled grey Arab stallion, and continued his useless chat with him, "But-".

October pushed him away from the stall. Move it, you dumb ass! he snorted. Mike took the hint, and walked over to Melissa, slowly, as if every second counted. As he walked away, October commented, Humans! They get more nervous and emotional than my ex mother-in-law!

Mike gently grabbed her arm, and pulled her aside. He walked her over to a bale of hay, and sat her down. "Melissa, I have something I need to get off my chest," he said, dropping to one knee. He gave another sigh, and continued, "Melissa, I love you more than my life itself. I've never felt that way about anyone else. I love you with all my heart, and if I lost you, I- I don't know what I would do. So, that's why," he stopped, and fished around in his pocket. He continued, as he pulled the velvety box from his pocket, "So that's why I have you sitting on a hay bale staring at me like I'm some idiot. Melissa, will you marry me?" he asked, his throat going strangely dry as he opened the box and presented the ring to Melissa.
