Subject: On Morrells, wild Asparagus and revitilizations....

My favorite time of year - Spring and all it's wonders. This time of year brings to Wisconsin two very special treats. Morrell mushrooms and wild Asparagus. They're in full glory as I write this. The growing season only lasts a few weeks and they're gone 'til next year. I went out this morning, behind the house in a small wooded patch, and was lucky enough to find half a small sack of morrells, about 25 in all. They're elusive buggers. When they grow at the base of dead elms they fit in so well, camoflaged and hiding. You really have to "train" your eyes or you'll look at them and still not "see" them. Like small biege sponges poking up through the old leaves and twigs. And then the pay off. Halved lengthwise and sauteed in butter and garlic...just has to be butter. mmmmmm...a truly wonderful "once a year" treat.
Wild Asparagus is a different undertaking. Along the back roads, some still gravel, it grows in the ditches. You must learn they're hiding spots as well. Driving slowly along, looking for last year's dead twiggy shoots sticking up a foot or more. There you may find some, growing at the base of long dead plants. Steamed and heated in white sauce...another miracle.
This year while wandering about, searching for my morsels, I saw the usual things...a doe and her twin fawns...a bald eagle in the treetops...but with unusual reactions. This year springtime and the miracles of it seem to be sending my awe into overdrive. Funny what a year, a diagnosis and some new found appreciation for life can do. I am truly blessed.
