Subject: Military Practice Session:32nd Fist, Light vs. 12th Enforcement Heavy

32nd Fist of Rugby's 3rd Light Infantry
"Ravage Squadron"
CO Steele

12th Enforcement of Rugby's Heavy Artillery
"Jackhammers"
CO Hamm

The twenty members of the 32nd Fist, Light Infantry (also known as Ravage Squadron) led the twenty two members of the Jackhammers (aka, 12th Enforcement of Heavy Artillery) into the 4th Holo-deck. They ignored any others as they walked into the Holo-deck and prepared for the training exercise.

Old Grim had been coming down hard on all facets of the Operations department. He was making it a point to whip these sorry excuses for deadbolts into some sort of shape. He had told all CO's that they're met were rusting in spot and they wouldn't be good for anything but spare parts for the Engineering Ensign screw-ups. He told this to just about some of the best soldiers on Rugby.

Old Grim had high expectations…of this they were all sure.

The purpose of this exercise was two fold.

The Ravage Squadron, as they liked to be called, had to lead an assault on on-coming heavy artillery. Their orders were to take out the main batteries that would be coming towards them with little collateral--in so doing, they had to put into action some of the plans they had boasted about back to Tactics. They had to make sure that they did this before their position (and home-base) were compromised.

The Jackhammers had an equally tough task and it consisted of being an offensive siege power. The holo-deck would set the far wall behind the Ravage Squadron to be the Ravage Home-Base. Inclusive in that would be heavy artillery, defensive perimeters (Deeps), force-fields, and an electromagnetic pulse cannon (EMPC) when needed.

CO Steele and CO Hamm saluted each other before heading to opposite points of the holo-deck. Tactics (having an eye on the military maneuvers in the holo-deck in their theory hall) activated the program and gave the soldiers 10 minutes of setup time.

Stars appeared in the holo-deck filling up the entire space. They were outside now, in zero-gee. Not to far behind was a planet. High enough that it's gravitational well wasn't affecting the operation but close enough that the small Ravage Home-Base was in an orbit to the place. The Ravage Home Base rotated in space, bristling with artillery and Deeps. Various Deep-Satelites revolved slowly around the Ravage Home-Base. The Deep-Sats were something that engineering had been working on, noted the Ravage Squadron, and it's purpose was theoretical up to this moment. Behind the small Home-Base was a supply line coming up from the planet. There was a steady stream of traffic. There was also a moon by the planet, but it was almost in opposite position to the Ravage Home-Base…once again, not affecting their gravity.

The Jackhammers were in position "10 light years" away. They had a map of the situation meeting them. They knew about the Deep-Sats pretty quickly, making sure that they sent in a small scout ship before enforcing their operations. Tactics nodded approvingly.

CO Hamm wished that they had a squadron of skirmishers to be sent in and investigate what the Deep-Sats did, but if wishing caused reality, he would be rich and retired. The scout ship reported that the Ravage Home-Base was quiet but ready. The scout ship also managed to tag Ravage Home Base with a particle of light, greatly confusing the Ravage Squadron who was monitoring any occurrences out in the war-room. Hamm nodded and called the Jackhammers to run Operation Hyper-War.

All Heavy Artillery craft powered up to warp 5, and the 10 light years became nothing in a matter of seconds. With pin-point accuracy, the Heavy Artillery came out of warp speed right at the doors of Ravage Home Base. Chaff and Disrupters were sent down Z230 degrees, to veer away any incoming projectiles. Two batteries (Skirmish 1 and 2) dove positive Y towards the incoming supply line, making sure to choke off the Ravage Home-Base. Weapons were online, didn't bother aiming, and began to fire. The space around Ravage was a war-zone for 2.3 milliseconds, and would soon cut into the base. At 3 milliseconds the base was under heavy fire, and in fact, Ravag'es reaction was too slow.

Tactics made a note.

The Deep-Sats went off and a nauseating wave of energy pulsed out. A lot of the artillery came offline, but some of the heavy batteries in the rear were still fully operational. The reprieve was enough for Ravage Squadron to launch a force. Ravage, broke off into six squadrons. One was sent towards the supply lines, the other five quickly maneuvered towards the batteries. They quickly split up. Two went Y, making sure to be slightly visible, but keeping clear of the heavy artillery cannons directly ahead. The Deep-Sats directly before them made sure that the guns wouldn't start firing. Another two went neg and pos X, splitting up to create a phalanx, they began laying down suppression fire. Useless really, no more than a distraction. One team dropped down into the falling chaff and disrupters which the Offensive Team was expulging.

The Jackhammers realized the use of the Deep-Sats and began to back up, getting out of their well of influence. The machines were set up to create a focused electromagnetic beam. Much more efficient than the pulse cannons in that it was a focused stream instead of the pulsating general hazard of the EMPC's. Heavy artillery turned on secondary power and dropped downwards, straight towards Ravage 5. Ravage 5 didn't expect the maneuver but quickly adapted their plans to incorporate the action.

The bulk of the Jackhammers hit a lot of chaff, and realized their mistake a second before it would become deadly. Since they were dropping towards the distraction chaff, and missiles were beaded on the stuff, they were also now part of the target cone of the oncoming warheads. The rear batteries began firing at the Deep-Sats to take out the equipment, a lot of the weapons being shot dead by anti-projectile weapons.

Ravage 1 and 2 began launching mortars down at the heavy battery, now open to an offensive attack because of the veering away of heavy artillery. The only good news was that Jackhammer Skirmish was making progress on the supply line and ingeniously sent out their amazing success on public channels. Ravage 3 and 4 suffered confusion and 4 went off to assist Ravage 6. CO Steele fumed but knew that if the Supply Line died, the base would be dead as well…but such a thing could be re-established after the immediate threat was repulsed. He ordered Ravage 3 to launch an EMPC in Supply Line's general direction…immediately Jackhammers Skirmish 2 and Ravage 4 and 6 were out of commission.

The Jackhammers cheered as one of the Deep-Sats were destroyed but Ravage 3 took that opportunity behind the destroyed Deep-Sat to launch another EMPC. It was the right thing to do being the Ravage 1 and 2 were out of range and Ravage 5 was directly underneath heavy artillery. Most of heavy artillery fell dead immediately and their secondary's would have come online if not for Deep-Sats quick turning of their focal EMP. Ravage 5 dropped further on neg Y now while the rear batteries were left open to attack. Quickly rear battery launched various "Thrill Seekers" towards Ravage Home-Base and they began to back off slowly, cannons still launching.

In the deep of the Jackhammer rear-battery force they were trying to bring heavy artillery back online. Ravage realized this and CO Steele called Home-Base to launch a neutron warhead. The Home-Base refused being that heavy artillery was too close and the weapon may be obliterated in Home-Base Space. CO Steele nodded…it was his mistake, he should have thought.

Quickly, he called Ravage 5 to come positive Z under rear-battery. Ravage 1 and 2 dropped towards rear-battery and the Jackhammers took aim to take them out….too late. Ravage 5 had attained goal.

Steele called in the program. Rear Battery's were dead. Heavy Artillery disabled. Collateral damage, supply-line destroyed. Ravage 6 lost. 2 Deep-Sats disabled.

Directly Y over Ravage Home-Base, Skirmish 1 dropped a mass EMP, wiping out the entire Ravage artillery and defense. A worthy attack being that all Heavy Artillery was disabled. CO Hamm smiled inside of Skirmish 1. CO Steele slammed the deck of part of Ravage 2.

Victory: Jackhammers.
