Author: Kathryn
Subject: Slowly, Kathryn Hanes lifted her head from her desk.

It seemed an odd time to take a nap, and the dream swiftly fading from her memory wasn't the kind she was used to. She checked her reflection in a nearby monitor, a momentary and rare lapse of vanity, but found her hair still perfectly in place and what little makeup she wore unmarred.

Sohn? Dichotomy? DimenScion? What was she researching that such nonsense words were in her mind? And why was Walt Patterson prevalent in all jumbled recollections? More than ever she wished he'd have the nerve to talk a little more. He wasn't the best-looking guy on the station but most of the guys she'd met were jerks out for one thing. He might be shy and bookish and younger, but he seemed nice, seemed like he might be able to make her laugh. And now that she was getting into her thirties her priorities were changing. Maybe it was time for a different sort of fellow. Why then did the word "creepy" suddenly intrude when she thought of Walt as well? It was as though she had two insightful impressions of the unassuming desk clerk now, and one was somewhat frightening. Something dark and hidden kept her from pursuing these thoughts, and she instead walked over to talk to nearby security milling around.

As the tale of her abduction came to light, she remained remarkably calm. Apparently she had been taken to the docking bay by one of the library patrons. The soldiers seemed confused, their own memories of the incident fuzzy. Were there others involved? Did their weapons become salmon? It was like some group hallucination and it was concluded to have the pipes inspected for any noxious leaks in the library.

Later, though. For now the soldiers had other details to attend to and Kathryn had research, much research to catch up on. It had been a confusing day and the library was a warm, safe place, where nothing could harm her. Why then was she so cold? Why so afraid? And why was she increasingly resistant to even picture that clerk, whose name she wouldn't even speak silently now. From now on she would let droids handle any paper deliveries to the brig. It was foolish for a human to go down there, and why were hard copies routing anyway? Wasn't this the future? She chuckled at that last thought, not quite understanding how she'd consider the present the future, and her mind soon wandered avenues of philosophy and idle time-passing speculation. She was safe, and no one would get past her defenses and hurt her again like....like...

no one would ever hurt her again.
