Well, here's what I thought: WILL THE WB PLEASE GET A FRICKIN' CLUE?!?!??!?!?!?!
No, the kiss was okay, didn't bother me: it so clearly meant less than nothing to Fred and was merely a surprise for Angel. It's the WB's insistence in turning every female who exchanges two words with Angel into a hot love interest in the promos that gets to me. I blame them for forcing the whole C/A nonesense down our throats last year, and seriously damaging both characters in the process. I think they were miffed over losing Buffy to UPN, and pushed a new romance in order to completely break Angel away from any connection to the other show. It was a stupid move, and it failed miserably, but I'm still bitter about it.
Every time there has been a female on the horizon with whom there's been a possibilty that Angel could get together, the fans have pretty much rejected the idea. The names Kate or Jheira ring any bells? Jheira was supposed to be a recurring character, with Bai Ling, the actress playing her, signed to do four eps. She went over so well that we never heard of her again. Fred was brought on as a potential love interest, and that went south almost immediately. There were rumors that Gwen was supposed to be paired with Angel, and they did share that inexplicable kiss when she restarted his heart. But, she looks much better with Gunn. I think the only reason they even attempted to pair Angel with Cordy was because the character of Cordy had a strong fan base and there was already a group of fans who were fanficing the C/A pairing. But in order to get beyond the sibling dynamic firmly established between the two of them, and to make it believable that Angel would be attracted to shallow, bitchy Queen C, they had to practically reinvent both characters, and not in a good way. Hence the popularity of the nicknames DorkAngel and St. Corduflia all over the internet as one character was dumbed down and the other turned into a not very convincing Buffy clone.
Angel, the character, seems to be coming back from the damage done to him, but I don't know if Cordy can. Charisma Carpenter, bless her, had a few pithy comments to make on the topic in her interview in the latest issue of Femmes Fatales (May 2003). She pretty much states that with Greenwalt, Minear and Whedon all gone, it was inevitable that the characters would suffer, and politely expresses doubt that Joss is right in saying that the show is better than ever. The issue also has interviews with ED and Stephanie Romanov, so it is well worth the purchase. And, there's an interview in SFX (#104, May 2003) where he actually admits that the one plot line he wasn't too enthusiastic about was the one that paired him with Cordy. "I think the romance that I had with Cordelia was not for me," to be exact.
Now that Buffy is ending, and UPN won't have a spinoff, there's no reason for the WB to continue to hold a grudge. We have to hope that the stunning lack of success of the C/A pairing, about which they've been ferociously back-peddling all season long, in my opinion (despite Cordy's weepy, "yes, we were in love" statement) will finally convince the WB that Angel fans prefer their hero brooding and faithful to his One True Love . . .who is now free of other contractual obligations and ripe for guest spot appearances.
