Well, the reason why I haven't checked this page for the past few weeks is that I just finished the revisions on a children's novel. The final version of the book was sent to the editor this past week. Now I get to start working on the next one.

As far as "making it" goes, though, there's very little money in writing unless your name is Steven King, Anne Rice, JK Rowling or John Grisham. I spent six months writing the novel, and my advance is the equivalent of three weeks salary at my day job (which I'm not about to quit). Of my friends who make their livings as writers, most supplement their income with teaching gigs, or journalism jobs. Some make comfortable livings, but a few are starving artists who can barely make ends meet.

I write because I just can't not write. It's what I do and who I am.

What a releif Margot to know you are still out there writing! I have read and reread all of your Buffy/Angel(us) stories for years now. I have to admit that I've patiently waiting for an update on my favorite story The Silken Cage Series. I read your authors note that said you won't be continuing it for at least another years, but it's been several years. I haven'nt given up hope, but I would LOVE the reassurance that you will be writng more to continue the TSC series. Please!! Let me know.

Yes, I'm going to continue with my fic. That was one reason for leaving my old job, taking a pay cut, and going to a new one that was supposed to be less stressful. Unfortunately, it has actually been almost as stressful, because of a combination of circumstances. But, that should ease up considerably in the next few weeks. I have to focus on the original fic, so fanfic will be slow to update. I'm sorry, but that's just how it is. Bt it is not being abandoned. That's all I can say for now.

Thanks for your continued interest.

IT would be a real shame to abandon it the way it is. You've given us a mesmerizing storyline and left us hungry for more!

Ohhh! I forgot to ask you: Will Angelus admit his love to Buffy soon? And vice versa? Please say yes! I know that he is not Angel and won't be a more "grr" version of him and his love won't be all candies and flowers, but it's love nonetheless. Albeit, more twisted and dark. Is that how you're going to portray it?

Margot, I love your writings and I am looking forward to another chapter or more. It is very well written and it is a shame if you do not finish it. Have you considered charging a nominal fee of perhaps one dollar (payable through paypal) since everyone needs to make a living. For those of us who enjoy your stories, I believe we would pay it.

While it is very kind of you to suggest that people would be willing to pay for my work, I can't charge money for fanfic, even if I wanted to (which I don't). Doing so would be an act of copyright infringement and would turn works intended as commentary on the original and legally defensible as such, to works that were, by the simple fact of making profit, derivative works as that term is defined in copyright law. I would then end up with Cease and Desist orders from FOX's lawyers and would have to give all the money I made plus fees and fines to the copyright owners (FOX) and then I'd have to take all of my fic down and never make it available again. This is why fanfic writers don't charge for their work.

Another reason why I don't charge for fanfic is that it's a hobby and a stress reliever that I share with other hobbiests (fanfic readers and writers). When I charge for my work (my published stories and the novels that I hope will be published within the year) it goes through additional vetting and revising and, well, work. I pretty much earn every penny I earn in that case, and those ideas, concepts and characters are totally mine.

I do appreciate the thought, though. I will try to have more for you, soon.
