Subject: *A short story* Titled- "A diamond in the rock"

Detective Alex Lynne tapped her pen thoughtfully against her empty coffee mug. She let the police report drop onto her cluttered desk as she leaned back into her leather worn chair. "Well, what do you think?" the middle aged man sitting accross from her asked. He ,like her, was also a detective. Lynne shrugged, "I don't know, Carlos, there's no clues, no leads, no nothing." Together they were investigating them urder of a rick painter, Mary Summers. Her death had police officers all throughout the area confused and lost. At the moment the crime scene was still off limits to the public. Mary's three story mansion had been her pride and joy, paid for by the many painting she had sold throughout her short life. it was the place she lived, painted, and also the place she had died. Mary had been working in her basement when she had been attacked from behind. This had led to a struggle and eventually ended with Mary strangled to death. Lynne sighed, "Well, why don't we go have one last look at the evidence down at the police station?" Carlos nodded his approval and fifteen minutes later they sat examining all the collected evidence from the crime scene. "What about the diamond necklace Mary was wearing?" Carlos asked propping his feet up onto the table. Lynne shrugged running over what had probably happened the night of Mary's death. the words "attacked from behind" played over and over in her mind. Suddenly Lynne shot up knocking papers to the floor. "Get that necklace examined!I'm going togather some of Mary's family and have a chat with them. Meet me at "Parker's Funeral Home" in an hour. And expect to make a quick, clean arrest!"
Detective Lynne scanned the faces around her. Among them were Mary's parents, some uncles and aunts, and her fiance, James. "We'll get this meeting started as soon as y partner arrives. But while were waiting we might as well talk a bit. So, James, where were you when you heard of Mary's death?" James wiped his puffy, red eyes. "Well as the police report says I was at home sorting through my bills, lately I've been having a bit of money trouble." Lynne turned to Mary's parents, " and I understand that the two of you were at a friend's dinner party?" They nodded in unison, and a tear slid down Mrs. Summers' cheek. Suddenly there was a loud rap at the door. Detective Carlos, followed by two policeman, walked stiffly toward the group. He pulled Lynne away and they talked quietly for a few minutes. Finally Lynne turned toward James and cleared her throat, "Sir you are under arrest for the murder of Mary Summers, you have the right to..."
Ok-befor you finish this story why not first try and figure it out yourself, then read on to see if you were even close!

An hour later the two detectives shared a booth at a local coffee shop sipping hot cappucinos. Carlos shook his head in amazement, "I still don't understand how you guessed to have that diamon examined." Lynned nodded, "Yeah, well when I remembered that Mary had been attacked from behind I figured that her killer had probably scraped their arm on the diamond. That left a good DNA sample, exposing her murderer. But it's just so ironic how the diamond that solved this case, was give to Mary by the same man that took her life!"
