Subject: Vicksburg 2010

Gentlemen,

As many of you already know the 9th Texas has made arrangements for a living history at Vicksburg in October 2010. The following information sets forth uniform guidance for this event.

VICKSBURG

The 9th Texas Infantry invites you to join us in our 2010 Living History event at Vicksburg National Military Park.
When: October 15th, 16th and 17th.

During this event we will be portraying Waul's Texas Legion of Stevenson's Division, in Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg. Our impression will be of an army who has been under siege and prior to this siege was equipped through the Mississippi Depot system. The uniform for this event is very specific. That is not to say, that if you do not have the article required, ask around for someone to see if they have extras. Nobody will be precluded from this event if they have the required 9th Texas uniform basic kit.

Remember the army is under siege, and had been at Vicksburg for approximately two months before the siege, which lasted an additional three months. They had received goods through the Mississippi Depot System (Not Trans-Mississippi) and most likely would have had uniforms from Columbus and maybe Atlanta. They had not seen US troops for a while, if at all, so obvious US items are highly discouraged. Additionally, they had been resupplied before the siege and civilian items are discouraged. They were garrisoned before the siege, and military etiquette would most likely been enforced. After the siege, the civilians would have been hard enough pressed to provide clothing and uniforms for the troops when they were living in caves.

Below are the requested guidelines for this event. From the more preferred to least.

Jackets - Columbus depot. Next best choices are Atlanta depot, Plain “Commutation” Jacket, and then Frock coats. (Jean cloth only)

Trousers - Jean cloth trousers. Civilian are discouraged. If you need braces and undergarments, wear them.

Head Gear - Slouch or jean cloth kepi

Belts - Belts should be leather. Oval C.S. plates and U.S. plates should not be worn. Georgia frame, forked tongue, roller buckles, and plain brass buckles are all excellent choices. According to the Vicksburg Museum no Texas Star buckles of any kind have ever been found. Pre-war buckles are acceptable (snake, early Texas rectangle, and what we have called plane brass militia buckles)

Brogans/bootees - Shoes should be of the Jefferson brogan type commercially available. In all kinds of conditions.

Cartridge box - 1855 Gaylord.58 caliber (stereotypical cartridge box). US Model 1839 .69 caliber box, US Model 1857 .69 caliber box, British Enfield box, Shelbyville .69 caliber box, Strap should be leather. Brass breastplates or box plates should be avoided, as they were not common.

Black cap pouch.

Haversacks - Plain white or off-white cotton canvas. Civilian haversacks and US ISSUE haversacks are discouraged.

Canteens - Tin drum, federal smooth side, bulls-eye, and Wooden, are all appropriate. All canteen covers on federal smooth or bulls-eye canteens should be brown/gray jean. Neither the federals nor the Confederates used dark blue or sky blue as a canteen cover very often. Please buy another or new cover.

Rifles - Three band, nuff said, with a bayonet and scabbard.

Blankets - One to stay warm, its October. Quilts and rugs are known to have been used for warmth in city garrisons. Painted ground cloths would be better than rubber.

Miscellaneous - Mess stuff, knapsacks, fine-China, candelabras, remember, stuff borrowed from the homes of Vicksburg.

That said, hopefully people just need to buy a white haversack and maybe a cover for their canteen. Uniforms would be dirty and worn. Since it was a garrison before the siege in a populated city, camp furniture should be more like ladder back chairs, stuff built from wood collected from houses, and stuff “acquired” from homes. Folding canvas chairs and other “camp” items should be at a minimum. Bring things you might have stolen from town. Canvas flys and shelter halves are better for stringing across the hole you lived in for three months.

This is the recommended list as gone over with the Vicksburg museum and from the 9th’s website. Stuff not mentioned above is discouraged. If you have questions about the requested guidelines, please do not hesitate to contact the 9th Texas at recruiter@9thtexas.org or post on the 9th message board.
