Subject: Civil War Day in Kaufman, TX - May 3

Greetings gentlemen. My name is Clay Dougherty I have been an off and on member of the 9th since high school. I am currently in my 7th year of teaching 8th grade U.S. history at Kaufman Jr. High in Kaufman, TX.

Over the past several years my Civil War presentation has transformed from just bringing my gear in to show the kids to what I did last year which was actually take them out back and teach them drill. They LOVED it.

So this year I decided to expand it even further. We will have a Civil War day Friday, May 3, from 8-3:30 at the Kaufman County Poor Farm which is across the street from the JH. This CW Day will serve two purposed 1) it educates the students about life in the CW and 2) it gives the Kaufman County Poor Farm some publicity for it has been named one of Texas’ most endangered historical sites.

This year I have 4 stations planned: My drill station (it would be awesome to have an officer come out and lead this session, I can keep time on the drum), a surgeon station teaching them about amputations using animal bones, a campfire cooking station, and a musket station where the students are taught to load and fire blanks and a little about the other weapons used. Ambitious, I know.

I would really appreciate any help I can get on this, all I really need for you to do is show up in costume read to teach kids about how incredible the CW truly is. I am desperately trying to work with my district to get some funding for you guys to at least make up for the gas used to drive out here.

If you are interested please email me at the address listed on this posting.

Thank you!
-Clay Dougherty
