Hi Patricia,
The 9th Texas, was never stationed anywhere for very long. It was mustered into service Dec 1 1861 at Camp Rusk in modern day Delta County. Fresh water was a problem at Camp Rusk. After only a few weeks, the regiment was moved to nearby Camp Benjamin. In January 1862, the 9th began it's march to Memphis. Maxey's 9th was not at Fort Sabine. The fort was garrisoned by local militia and the 6th Texas Infantry. By late 1862, Fort Sabine had been abandoned. There was another "9th Texas Infantry" under Nichols. It was mustered into service in Galveston. We have your relatives listed in Maxey's 9th. The most complete history of the 9th is contained in a college thesis by Brian Reed. I'll email you a copy. Another good read is the J.K. Street letters.
Best regards,
Brian Larsen
