Subject: alternative mouse?

Having switched (finally) from a DOS based to a Windows based word processor I find that the standard popout mouse simply is far too irritating to use (cute idea though it was). Does anyone know of a reasonable way of plugging in an external mouse? I saw one that could plug into a USB port, but getting a USB port in there seems to be impossible (I'm told my version of Windows 98 won't support a PCMIA to USB card, which is a real pity). Does anyone have any suggestions? Are there other ways of getting an external mouse? I really hate to abandon my HP, which is much nicer for typing than any of the new notebooks I've seen--except for the rodent problem.
