I walked into the barn and went to Callie's stall. I brought her halter and slipped it over her head. I led her out by her halter to the cross-ties. I clipped her and went to get the grooming kit. I took out the rubber curry and started currying her. After that I used the soft dandy brush. With an expert flip of my rist I got off all the dirt and loose hair. I put it back in the grooming bucket. Then I grabbed the hoof pick and slid my hand down her leg. She picked it up and I got all the dirt and manure out of her feet. I finished grooming her and then put the grooming bucket away. I got her red saddle pad, her all purpouse saddle, girth, and bridle. I put them all on top of the stall door exept for her saddle pad. I lifted it onto her back and positioned it right. I then grabbed the saddle and set that on her back. I put on the girth and then tightened it. I quickly slipped off her halter and in 3 seconds I had the bridle over her head. I buckled it up and then un-clipped her from the cross-ties. I led her out to the arena and mounted. I shoved my toes into the stirrup irons and squeezed her into a walk. She responded and softly tugged on the reins. After 2 times around the arena I cued her to trot. I posted softly and then weaved her around some poles to loosen her up. I bended her in some circles and she grunted. "It's ok Callie, we have got to do it." I patted her neck. Then I cantered her. I cantered her over some jumps. An oxer, then straight to a bounce. A tight turn to the left and we ended up right at a liverpool. Next came to a vertical. Then straight up a line toward a triple. Then an oxer. She soared over all the jumps. I slowed her down and patted her neck. I cooled her out and then dis-mounted. I walked her back up to the barn. I cross-tied her and untacked her. I put her tack away and led her by her halter out to her paddock. I walked her into the middle of the field and turned her around. I gave her a carrot and un-clipped her leadrope. I walked back to the gate and heard her whinny and take off. I shut the gate and went to Sparkle's stall.
She looked still a little bit hot and I felt her chest. "yep, you have just been ridden huh." I scratched her poll. I gave her a quick carrot piece and walked toward the barn office. I saw Joe. "Hey Joe," He looked at me and smiled. "Hey mom," "So, did you ride Sparkle," I asked. '' Oh, yeah I took her over the cross country course." he answered. "Oh, she was still warm," He blushed. "Sorry, mom. I won't do that again." he said. ''So how was she over the course?" I asked. "Oh, she was great. When we got up to the top of the hill she popped over the little jump. She trotted down the hill but made a minor stumble at the bottom. That made her stumble through the liverpool at the bottom," He said." Oh, well thn di...," I said, he inturrupted me. " I did soak it for a while and then bandaged it." He said. "Oh, good." He set down the feed chart and we walked out of the stable office. "Honey, are you ok," I asked. "Yeah mom I'm fine." I gave him a hug. Even though he was trying to hide it I saw him wince. I took my arm of his waist and turned to him. "Joeseph, what is the matter?" I demanded. "Oh, what?" he said. "I'm fine." I looked him straight in the eye. ''Can I take a look at your back." I didn't let him answer and pulled it up. On his back was a huge bruise the size of a baseball and some very bad scratches. "Oh, mom. I'm sorry I didn't tell. These kids were beating me up at school. They pushed me and punched me." He looked down at his shoes. I gasped. "Well we had better go fix up those scratches up. Then we can talk about those boys that beat you up," We walked back up to the house and I saw him wince with every step...
