Susan woke to the sound of her alarm. DEET! DEET! DEET! She hit the button and sat up. She walked into the bathroom and brushed her teeth. She slipped on her jeans and a long sleeved shirt that said ‘Because I’m the TRAINER, that’s why!’ Heading downstairs, she saw heard Mike getting up and smiled contentedly. She got the coffee started and fed the dogs, giving Sparks, Lila, Sam, and Bandit each a special treat. She ate a bowl of cereal and headed out to the barn, leaving a note for Mike on the coffeepot. Reaching the barn, Susan smiled happily and started to fill feed buckets. She fed Cobalt, Magic, Darkie, and all the other stallions before heading to the mare barn. She fed all the mares and then fed geldings and yearlings. She headed to the broodmare barn and as soon as she stepped in, she heard a raspy, ragged breathing. Gasping in horror, she raced to Beauty and Carol’s stall and saw the small black filly laying on her side, gasping for air. She ran in and knelt down. She examined Carol and couldn’t feel any breaks, fractures, etc. She ran to the feed room and dialed the phone. “Hello? Dr. Harrison? Can come over as fast as you can? One of my fillies is really, really sick. She can hardly breathe!” Susan said, her voice trembling slightly. “Yes, Susan. I’ll be right there.” Dr. Emma Harrison said, hanging up. Susan rushed back to the stall and sat beside Carol, patting the filly’s mother, Beauty. The QH filly had always been tiny and very delicate. Within 10 minutes, Dr. Harrison raced into the barn and Susan called, “In here!” The vet slid open the stall door and began to examine the filly, working swiftly and silently. After a thorough examination, Dr. Harrison took some X-rays and said gravely, “I have my suspicions, but these X-rays will confirm it. I will be back within 20 – 30 minutes.” Susan waited and kept patting Carol gently, praying she would be alright. After about 35 minutes, the vet was back and she called Susan into the barn aisle. “Carol has Equine Influenza. I hope she will be okay, but she is so little and young… she could slip away any time. I brought some antibiotics to help with her pain and congestion.” The vet said softly. Susan closed her eyes in pain and replied, “I’m going to be staying with her. If she gets any worse, I will call you.” Dr. Harrison smiled sadly. “I’ll come to check on her everyday. I will be back tomorrow.” She said, walking out quietly. Stepping back inside the feed room, Susan called the house. “Mike, it’s me. Carol is sick and I will be staying with her at all times to make sure she doesn’t…” Susan said. “I will bring you some coffee and maybe a few blankets.” He replied. A few minutes later, he stepped into the stall with three blankets and two thermoses. She smiled and said a half hearted thanks, returning her attention to Carol.
AFTER A WEEK…
“She’s recovering, slowly but surely. You don’t have to stay with her anymore.” Dr. Harrison said, looking over Carol one last time. Susan sighed and patted the filly lovingly. She walked into the barn office and sat down in her chair. She slid opne a desk drawer and scooped out a folder saying ‘South Carolina Courage’. Inside, there were pictures of Carol, her training schedule, pedigree, everything. She slipped in the doctor’s diagnosis, treatment, etc. and then walked out to the paddock to get Magic, filled with happiness.
