Susan smiled and laid the dressage saddle on Delilah’s back. The cool, autumn day was the kind of day that both horse and rider enjoyed. The sweet Morgan mare danced playfully in the crossties. Susan laughed good naturedly and tightened the girth. She smiled and strapped on her helmet, before slipping the bit into Delilah’s mouth. The mare snorted as she was led to the dressage arena. Susan swung into the saddle and gathered the reins. She sponged them lightly and Delilah tucked her head close to her chest. Squeezing gently, Susan sat deeply in the saddle, back arched and heels in perfect position. Delilah stepped out in a nice, graceful walk, hocks engaged beneath her. The Morgan had a very nice way of carrying herself, graceful with naturally flowing gaits. Susan worked the mare on a few circles, smiling as Delilah bent expertly. After a few minutes, she squeezed and Delilah glided forward in a smooth, elegant trot, tucking her head closer to her chest and chomping the bit eagerly. Susan exaggerated her posting and touched Delilah lightly with her legs. The mare flung out her legs in a big extended trot. Her mane flew out behind her slightly and her elegant gait was exactly what Susan had asked for. The rider sat close to the saddle and sponged the reins. Delilah collected into soft, supple trot through some serpentines and then Susan started the mare on a circle. She kept the mare’s movement uphill and very smooth as she prepared for the canter. In the corner, Susan slid her outside leg back and bumped Delilah. The mare flowed into a smooth working canter and Susan took her through some basic collecting and extending. Then, as they went down their diagonal, Susan began asking for flying lead changes. The mare willingly switched leads every stride. She looked beautiful and then Susan took the reins a little firmer and squeezed, locking her back. Delilah dropped smoothly into a halt, from the canter. Susan let the mare walk on a loose rein for a few minutes and then gathered up the contact again. “Just some shoulder-ins and a few counter canters.” Susan said, patting the mare’s glossy palomino coat. She started the mare in a working trot up centerline and then pressed gently with her left leg. The mare came round and lifted her back while performing a shoulder-in right. Susan took the Morgan through some more movements and grinned as she felt the mare’s smooth, controlled trot. Suddenly, Delilah tossed a playful buck and Susan knew the mare had had enough. She cooled her out and then rode up to the barn. :-)
