Today I took Memento for a trail ride to give him a relaxing look at his surroundings, while still keeping him fit. As usual, he was quite excited at the beginning and friskishly sprung around, I let him jog it out for a few mins before we started on the trail. It was a beautiful day for a trail ride and Memento was enjoying the easy work-out. I cantered him for quite a distance to keep him used to what he will have to do when on the eventing course. We rounded the bend and in front of us there was a huge tree that had fallen in the storm the night before. Memento sailed over the giant tree, without a thought and cleared it perfectly. He was born to be an eventer! I worked Memento in all gaits and I could feel his strong legs working beneath me on the often uneven terrain, yet he remained so smooth and steady. If I didn’t no better, I said to him softly, you could be a dressage horse. At that exact moment, as if mocking my statement he tossed his head and eagerly sped up without me giving him a command. I laughed. Perhaps he was a little to spirited for that kind of discipline! After another hour on the trail, we reached the stable yard once again. I dismounted and unsaddled him. He had worked up quite a sweat so I walked him around the yard for about 5 mins until he had cooled and then I hosed him down. I then lead him over to his regular field and let him loose. He bucked a couple of times and then galloped down to the other end of the field an began to graze. I picked up his saddle and other equipment and took it back into the barn.
