Hershey’s Kiss
All The King’s Gold

Helen led her Daughter , Suzie’s, TW Gelding, All The King’s Gold into the barn and clipped him in crossties. At this point Helen’s husband Eric, cam into the barn leading Helen’s Morgan mare, Hershey’s Kiss. He attached the crossties to her halter and followed Helen into the tack room. “Hey Eric” Helen said, lifting a large western saddle off of its rack” we need to work western with these to, which I know will make you happy”. “yep” he replied. He preferred riding western to English, but was still a good English rider. “lets go” he said scooping up his tack. They both walked out to their horses and began to groom them. After giving both horses a good brushing they tacked them up and pulled on there helmets. Eric and Kiss led the way out to 1 of the arenas that was devoted to western riding. Helen swung off the mounting block, into the saddle. Eric followed suit and settled into Kisses saddle. They both warmed up their horses then Helen jogged King over to Eric and Kiss then asked. “Wanna run some barrels?”. “Sure” Said Eric. Helen maneuvered King to the middle of the ring. At the top of the ring was a clover leaf pattern made a 3 barrels. “I’ll go first” she called to her husband. King stood poised and ready beneath her. She dug her heels into Kings sides and he shot off like a rocket. Helen followed the motion of his well proportioned body as he galloped for the first barrel. She leaned with him as he swerved around it and then around the 2nd. After the second she squeezed him on to the 3rd he bolted easily around it and Helen gave a whoop as he galloped over to where Eric had halted Kiss. “My turn” he said happily. He urged Kiss into a gallop and headed for the barrels. Kiss dashed around 1st barrel expertly before thundering around the 2nd. Eric leaned slightly as she finished the 2nd barrel and headed for the 3rd. he urged her on and she rocketed around the last. He cantered her over Helen and King then halted infront of them. “Wanna run them 1 more time?” Eric asked, smiling at his wife. “OK” Helen said, smiling back. They both ran the barrels with their horses one more time then walked out of the ring together. “neither of hem is very tired. Why don’t we go for a trail ride? We need to work on their trail skills anyway cause they are entered in western trail at the FC July show” Helen said, patting King’s neck. “Yeah! Lets go” Eric said and they moved off.
They headed down a sun dappled trail. It had a few 2’ jumps and crossed several streams. They proceeded down the trail chatting happily, with their horses on a loose rein. As they came onto a long stretch of trail that continued strait for some distance, Eric pulled Kiss up, winked and said “I bet Kiss and I can beat you to that big oak tree up there. “And I bet you can’t.” Helen replied. “ 1…2…3” Both riders spurred their horses on. The 2 horses thundered down the trail side by side, Kiss’s dark bay coat contrasting attractively with King’s palomino 1. As they approached the old oak tree King put on an extra burst of speed and pulled ahead just before the tree. Helen leaned over and laughed heartily as Eric came up on Kiss pretending to be very offended. “Well you lost your bet” Helen said happily. “Well it was fun anyway” Eric replied. They rode the trails for another 20 minutes. On the way they took a few 2’ logs and splashed about in the stream. Then they headed back to the barn.
When they got back to the barn they dismounted and led their horses inside. Both horses and riders were sweaty and hot (it was about 80 degrees). They untacked and gave the hot horses bathes, sweat scraped them and put them in their stalls with coolers on. Then they walked back to the house. Inside the house Suzie was sitting watching the DVD of the Harry Potter movie. “Its not fair that Jess gets to go to Ireland and I have to stay here?” she said sulkily. “well one bit of consolation for u id that she went to a 3-day-eventing farm not a saddleseat farm” Helen said, walked over and consoling her daughter. Suzie acknowledged this and went back to the movie. Helen walked into the kitchen to fix dinner. G2G! WILL CONTINUE LATER!
