Susan opened Cobalt’s stall and looked at the handsome Trakehner stallion. He snorted playfully and nuzzled her. She grabbed a lead shank and hooked him in crossties. Gently, she brushed his sleek black coat. Then she slipped a saddle pad and saddle onto his back. She tightened the girth and strapped on her helmet. Cobalt tossed his head playfully as she tried to bridle him and then accepted the bit. Laura walked into the barn. “He’s lovely, Mom. Can I ride with you?” she said hopefully. “Sure, sweetie. Get Bet, he could use a jumping workout, but Alli can’t jump him because he needs a very experienced rider, like you.” Susan said. Laura grinned and got Bet. She tacked him up quickly and followed Susan out to the arena. They swung into the saddle and began their warmup. Susan pushed Cobalt into a working walk and suppled him up both directions. Laura walked and trotted serpentines to supple Bet up. The spirited stallion felt her strong confident riding style and gave her no trouble. Soon, they had both cantered their stallions, and they were ready to try jumping. They headed to the arena and Susan went first. She cantered a courtesy circle and urged Cobalt over the first jump. He bounced over the 3’ rollback easily. They headed over 6 more jumps before they headed for a particulary tricky spread. He stretched over the 3’3” jump, clipping a pole but not knocking it down. They finished the course in excellent time and a clear round. “Cobalt is moving nicely. I’ll raise the jumps for Bet.” Susan tied Cobalt to the rail and raised the jumps, the highest being 4’9”. Laura guided Bet through a courtesy circle and pushed him over the first jump. They cleared it easily and headed for second jump, a 4’6” coop. Bet tucked his legs up and bounced over it. They soared through the rest of the course and halted beside Susan. “He’s awesome! He just bounces over these. He will do Grand Prix easy!” Laura said happily. Susan nodded. “He’s pretty awesome. I was wondering. Would you rather have a racehorse or a 3 day eventer?” she asked her daughter. “Oh, mom, I love both. I love the thrill of racing but eventing is fun too.” Laura said. Susan looked thoughtful. “Well, I might buy you a young horse with 3 day eventing prospect to train and let you ride Best Bet in races and stuff. How does that sound?” Susan said. “Great!” Laura said cheerfully. Susan squeezed and Cobalt walked forward. Laura nudged Bet gently and the stallion walked forward. Mother and daughter took their favorite trail and popped over a few 3’ logs before heading back to the barn. They untacked and put the stallions in their stalls. Then they sat down in the lounge and looked at some horses that might be good for Laura.
