Chance snorted eagerly as Susan laid the dressage saddle onto his back. He nipped at her playfully as she tightened the girth. Susan smiled and strapped on her helmet. Chance butted her gently as she slipped the bit into his mouth. Susan led him to the arena and swung into the saddle. The big rangy TB colt was only 3 y/o but showing tons of potential. Susan squeezed and Chance walked smoothly forward, rounding his back. She smiled and sponged the reins gently to keep Cobalt round. He was smooth and perfect, his stride reaching forward. He arched his neck after a minute and Susan squeezed he trotted forward, perky and elegant. Susan pushed him forward into the bridle. He came on the bit, round and relaxed. She did a few serpentines as warm up, pushing him to the outside rein and keeping him bent. Chance was ready for some more intro level work! Susan rode him firmly up centerline and sponged the reins at X. Chance dropped to a medium walk and moved straight up centerline to C, where he turned right with ease. They went through the rest of the test with lots of energy and rythym. Susan sat deep in the saddle and guided Chance on a circle. She squeezed her outside leg and held steady contact. The colt bounced into an energetic canter, a little hectic and unbalanced. Susan bent him and relaxed his stride. He looked very graceful and smooth by his third lap around the circle. Susan slowed him to a walk and practiced their freewalk. He had been getting very good at this movement. He stretched out and was over tracking nicely. Susan patted Chance’s withers and dismounted. She untacked the TB and gave him a cool bath. She turned the frisky colt out in his paddock and cleaned her tack.
