I don't consider anyone using trojans or trying to learn to automatically be a lamer. To me, lamers are the kids that go around acting stupid or putting down those that are trying to learn more. "Lame" activities are forum flooding, posting under someone else's name, and just being a general stupid ass. I personally think SubSeven is great for learing and very effective at what it was designed to do. If someone claims they are "hacking" and are RELYING EXCLUSIVELY on SubSeven, that would be lame. It has been said that the guy that hacked Microsoft used a trojan to get his foot in the door. I think that mail bombing is generally considered "lame", but can actually bring down a mail server or disable an account.

What bothers me is when the term "lamer" is thrown around as an insult to those that are trying to learn or are just having fun. A lamer is defined by a person's behavior relative to his abilities.
