I expected a lot more people to be asking questions about proxy servers than I've seen. About the proxies on my list:

I personally verify each and every proxy on the list as both working and anonymous. Some proxies actually forward your IP address to the server you are connected to. I try to weed these out, and only keep proxies that do not forward your IP address on my list. In that regard, I think I keep one of the best (albeit short) proxy lists on the internet.

Proxy servers are set up one of two ways:

1. The host allows the port to stay open for public use.
2. The host is not aware that they are being used as a proxy.

I do not know which proxies are 1 and which are 2. When a host that is running a proxy, but is not aware that they are being used finds out that they're being used by the general public (you and me and other non-paying customers), they usually close the proxy down, and sometimes open it on another port. For that reason, proxies come and go, and are discovered and then killed. That's why I have to update the list every month or so. For that reason, I post the date that the list is updated.

Anonther thing is that I try to include proxies from all over the world. That is why some might be fast and some might be slow. An advantage of using a proxy in a country other than your own is that it is harder to track you, but the flipside is that it usually slows your connection down.

As for the level of anonymity being based on your location relative to the proxy, that's not true. Whether you are going through a proxy from the United States or from China, your IP address will be the same. The speed of your transfer might differ, depending on where in the world the proxy is located, but the anonymity level will be the same if you are using the same proxy.

Incidentally, I checked the proxy list and 4 were no longer working. I replaced them and now all are working and anonymous.
