I think that there is no harm whatsoever in partitioning your hard-drive to run a dualboot.
The only thing i do warn you about is running a distro of linux on the windows partition which can cause unstability and will run linux alot slower.
If you are to chose a first *nix like os then i also reccomend mandrake. It is very user friendly but can also compete up there with other top distros and is very stable.
