Subject: Healthy balance?
In reply to: Noggins 's message, "I wanna be an epicurean!" on 16:33:44 06/25/02 Tue

Nevertheless, even Epicurus himself expounded that although all pleasures are good in themselves, not all are to be chosen, since certain pleasures produce aggravations greater than the pleasure itself.
Also, balance with that the blank materialism that is prevalently associated with the Epicurean absolute denial of existence post-mortem, and there is a strong case to be made for Stoicism.
Camus can be seen as supporting the egality of death in L'étranger, especially in the opening gambit that asserts "Aujourd'hui, maman est morte. Ou peut-être hier, je ne sais pas", but he also applies a more virtuous, Stoic attribute to humanity- innate compassion, "Dès qu'il m'a vu, il s'est soulevé un peu".

Greek philosophy meets 20th Century French literature? I knew there was a reason I like these boards!
