Episode VI: The Box

TEASER
Buffycomes to the Magic Box to see if any texts might have survived that can help her find information on the sired slayer; she finds Xander. They sit down on the step and talk and he expresses his sorrow about Anya. Xander picks up a talisman from the floor and fiddles with it. Xander isn't sure he can cope with running a shop. Buffy suggests he do something else with it. Xander isn't sure he can since this the shop reminds him of Anya so much. He drops the talisman and it splits in two. Buffy talks him into leaving with her. Xander agrees. The broken talisman starts to glow.

ACT ONE
Willow and Buffy are discussing general business (Spike, new danger, etc.) when the discussion turns to Xander. Willow is a little worried about Buffy. Buffy denies anythingis wrong, even though the incident with Spike in the previous episode is affecting her. Willow mentions Xander not being around as much and Buffy tells them about her encounter with him at the Magic Box.

Shift toXander, who is standing over near where the counter once was, picking up charred objects with a profound melancholy. He picks up one half of the talisman we saw earlier and seems to be fascinated by it, holding it up as if mesmerized. Absently he touches the other half and suddenly hears Anya's voice warning him not to put those two together, that it would be a disaster. He reacts instantly, throwingthe second talisman across the room and at the same time dropping the other oneaccidentally while looking around wildly, but then realizes that there isn't anyone there. It was just his own mind playing tricks on him, he decides. He begins to talk aloud, to himself, then to the shop, accusing it of taking away everything that mattered to him...then he freezes at the sound of Spike's voice taunting him. He demands to know what the vamp is doing there, and Spike says he didn't think the space would be occupied, and he mentions Anya, and Xander goes nuts, hitting Spike and knocking him down before we (and Spike) see him start to trash what hadn't already been trashed like a crazy man until he suddenly stops, panting, whenhe sees the talisman he had dropped at his feet earlier. Again he hears Anya's voice, telling him that she loves him, and to pick it up. He does, muttering that heloves her too, prompting Spike to make a smart remark about him losing his mindwhich Xander acts like he doesn't hear. It's like he doesn't even know Spike isthere anymore. Absently he places the talisman in his pocket and leaves the shop, leaving Spike looking after him in confusion, confirming his hatred of all humans. His expression briefly grows wistful and he mentions Anya as an exception, and heads toward the exit. The camera pans back and we see 'Anya' standing there, an evil smile on her face.

ACT TWO
Spike ispacing around his crypt with Clem trying to calm him down. Blah blah blah hate humans, hate Buffy and Xander etc. etc. Having his soul back only seems to make him hate everything that much more. Clem tries to placate him by saying that he thinks that Buffy will come around, but Spike protests that he doesn't want that anymore. He just wants to be a vampire like he was before...but he can’t. Clem asks what he expected, and Spike doesn’t answer.

Willow stops Xander outside his apartment. Xander is just leaving. He is clearly distracted and tries to brush her off, but she won't be gotten rid of until he promises her that he'll stop by that night, to help them with the research on the sired slayer bit. He even manages a smile when she tells him she loves him. Willow hugs him,but we see his face is utterly blank when she does and he hears Anya call to him.

Xander walks into the shop and shuts the door. Arms encircle him from behind, and we hear Anya's voice say she thought she's never see Xander again. We see Xander startto relax into the embrace, then suddenly realize what he's doing and jump. He whirls around...and there's no one there. Xander wonders aloud what the hell is goingon...

...which cues us into a little Buffy exposition session with Dawn...a little explanation of sired slayer, Dark Mother, where we are to this point, with discussion of the Scooby session scheduled. Dawn asks about Spike, and Buffy says she doesn't want him there. Dawn questions that. Buffy tells Dawn to leave it. Dawn says she doesn’t want to leave it, and she can’t - they’re all part of her family, Spike included, and she can’t be shut out of stuff. Buffy asks her if they can please talk about it later and talk about something else now, and Dawn asks if Xander's going to be okay...

...asXander wonders aloud if he's going crazy. Why does he feel like he has to be inthe shop all the time? Why does he feel so...haunted? 'Anya' finally appears totell him[with a real schmuck baity musical cue], "I'm not haunting you. I'm loving you. I'll never stop loving you." We (but not he) get that this kind of lovin',Xander does not need.

ACT THREE
Xander and 'Anya' in the Magic Box. Xander thinks she's a ghost until she proves to be solid. Then he thinks she's a hologram. She asks him why it's so hard to believe that she's real. He answers that it's because he wants it to be true so badly. 'Anya' assures him that it is really her, but that he was right. The shop is cursed and she's been trapped inside...but she's found a way out. It means having to leave this dimension forever, and go to another one, a better one...and she needs Xander to come with her. He's the only one that can save her. Xander is floored but clearly has reservations. He suggests that he should go get Buffy and the others...

...Willow comes in to find only Buffy and Dawn. Buffy had hoped it was Xander. Willow questions where Xander is. Willow and Buffy head out to search for Xander, splitting up:Willow to the Magic Box, Buffy to Xander‘s place. Buffy asks Dawn to wait at the house in case Xander shows. Dawn says she will, but heads out herself afew moments later. The book she’d been pretending to read falls off the coffee table as the door closes, and we see a closeup of a drawing of Saria inthe arms of a vampire...

'Anya'begs Xander not to leave her, grabbing him and giving him a hug... He asks her what they need, and she tells them nothing big, just a sacrifice... 'Anya' commentsyou can't get around anywhere these days without blood… Xander panics.Anya calms him down by kissing him and seducing him. 'Anya' tells Xander that he’ll do this for her if he loves her…

...move to Spike in his crypt. Dawn enters. Spike seems happy to see her at first,till she brings up Buffy. Spike is very upset that Buffy won’t give him a chance...and in making excuses for her sister Dawn makes the mistake of bringing up Xander. Spike grows cold, saying Xander stands no chance with Buffy - she only loves killers. Dawn storms out of the crypt, only to come face to face with Saria.

Willow is looking into the shop. She sees Xander in there with Anya. Willow is a bit shaken. Willow looks in her bag for her phone to tell Buffy. She turns around to be face to face with Xander.

ACT FOUR
And we see Willow with her hands tied over her head, ritual sacrifice position, whileXander fingers the amulet and continues to talk to 'Anya' who mentions again how much she loves him and how happy they'll be once they get away from everyone who stands in their way. Xander experiences a flash of memory of his kiss with Buffy and is shaken. Willow tries to talk to him, telling him that he doesn't want to do this, that he was right and there was something evil here and he had to fight it. Xander has flashes of Willow too. He seems to come out of it a bit and tells Willow he's sorry, but he has to do this. He can't let Anya go. Willow remindshim that's how she felt not so long ago, and how he pulled her back...she tellshim that they all want him here, and love him, and they had to stick together, because otherwise...

...Dawn is clearly afraid but holding her ground. Saria makes no move against her, instead grilling her about Buffy, what it’s like to be helpless on the sidelines in this fight, to always be the victim, always need saving. Dawn counters thatshe’s not helpless and Saria laughs, asserting that she knows that Dawn is waiting for her sister to save her right now, but that she won’t, because sooner or later the human family of the Slayer always pays...it’s whySlayers are meant to fight alone...

...atthe same time Xander turns to 'Anya' and tells her that he's worried what Buffywill do without any of them, if they kill Willow and then leave, she'll be all alone. 'Anya' says it won't matter, they'll be together and happy, but Xander drops the amulet and his mind seems to clear. He tells 'Anya' that he's sorry but he could never be happy knowing he'd done things like this to his friends...that he didlove her, but not enough. It was never enough, and this was his guilt making him do this, not his love... 'Anya' grabs Xander… Xander grabs a sword…'Anya' backs away but Xander swings the sword only to release Willow…

...Dawn tells Saria she’s wrong about her. She’s not Buffy’s weakness, her trap...and she’s not waiting for Buffy to rescue her. Dawn moves into fighting position...and Spike comes flying out of nowhere and tackles Saria. He yells for Dawn to run, and Saria leaps to her feet, a strange, sad look on her face. She vanishes into the night as Buffy comes running up...after herrelief that Dawn is alright, she tells them Willow called but the line went dead and there’s been no answer - they need to hurry. She looks to Spike, and Spike snarls at her to get away from him and take Dawn, and make her stay away.Dawn is hurt and confused...Saria watches them from the shadows, tears on her face…Spike also looks lost once they’ve gone.

...'Anya' decides that if Xander couldn't 'love' her then Willow will...it shifts into Tara, all the time begging her to love her. Willow and Xander are horrified, but Willow figures that it's doing this because it can't actually kill them, it needs oneof them to do the killing for it! It can't harm them, she cries triumphantly...and the monster, takes a ghost like form and rushes forward, knocking the two of them across the room. They look like they'll be done for... Xander looks down at the talisman he is still holding. Willow distracts 'Anya' and Xander slides acrossthe floor grabbing the other half of the talisman. 'Anya' shifts back, begging him not to kill her...and Xander says only that it's time for them both to move on,before bringing the second half of the talisman crashing down on the first. 'Anya' dissolves into the mystical energy we saw in the beginning, then dissipates with an unearthly scream. Xander smashes the talisman and it releases a flash of light. Xander falls to his knees, just as Dawn and Buffy come running in. Xander is frozen, tears on his face, and the three girls kneel around him, wrapping their arms around him in a hug.

Xander sits on the step at the entrance to the shop next to Buffy. Xander tells her that Giles said the talisman was the dwelling place for a genie of sorts, an evil one that promised the summoner his heart’s desire in exchange for committing acts of death and destruction. Giles said the order was an error in shipping and that Anya had planned to send the amulet back, but hadn‘t gotten around to it apparently...they talk about how hard life is and how moving on can be hard… Xander stands up. Buffy asks if Xander is sure he is ready for this.Xander nods. Buffy kisses Xander and walks away as in the background Xander climbs a step ladder and starts unscrewing the sign to the 'Magic Box'.

Episode VII: Saria

TEASER
China: We start the episode with Saria sprinting through a forest. It is evening (past sunset) so it is dark, but light enough to see people. She reaches a glade andstops. The people she was chasing have disappeared. She looks around. A poison dart flies towards her, but she swings around and grabs it. She looks at it momentarily before looking up. In front of her is a man (Cain - call him male vampire), while behind him is a woman (Lillith - call her female vampire) who's face is covered by a shroud and her body in animal skins and cloths. The Cain/ male vamp puts on his game face as does the female/ Lillith and they attack Saria. Saria uses her slayer strength well and fights both vampires. She knocks down Lillith but Cain grabs her from behind and prepares to bite her. Suddenly another man (you can name him… he is Saria's vampire lover) jumps down from the trees above and puts on his game face before staking Cain. Lillith stands up and screams. Saria clutches her throat gasping for air. Lillith runs off into the night. Saria turns to her lover and he goes back to a human face and they kiss passionately.

Sariaawakes from a dream - possibly the flashback we’ve just seen - and prowls the room she’s holed up in. It’s the vampire lair Spike destroyed in Episode 2. She kicks aside some soot and dust and uncovers the snake symbolstill visible on the ground. Saria smiles. And back at the Summers house, both Buffy and Dawn awake suddenly, as if from nightmares..

Credits

ACT ONE

Buffycomes downstairs and finds Will and Xander making breakfast for a sleepy Dawn. Both Summers girls seem out of sorts, and Buffy admits she didn’t sleep well last night - too many dreams. Xander asks if they were Slayery and Buffy says she’s not sure...she describes seeing Saria doing something with the vampire cult symbol and no one notices Dawn get seriously pale until Xander asks her if she wants waffles. Dawn runs from the room yelling back something about being right back. Buffy tells Willow and Xander she thinks Dawn is still shaken up by her Saria encounter from a few days ago. Willow asks her if there had been any more signs of her - in person signs, not dreams - and Buffy confesses there had been none.She thinks she should ask Spike, and Xander frowns. Willow forestalls the argument by saying that she and Xander will keep on with the research on Saria.

Dawn is in her room, sitting on her bed. She opens her journal with trembling hands, and we see a painstaking drawing of the cult’s snake-infinity symbol, along with the word ‘why?’ written repeatedly...

CHINA:Saria is in the forest with her lover. They walk into their shelter. Saria finds blood everywhere. Saria sobs over her mother's body. her lover points to Lillith's serpent like infinity symbol on a wall made out of her Saria's family's blood. Saria grabs a weapon and heads out. The lover tries to follow but Saria asks him to bury the dead and to make sure none of them rise. Saria says Lillith has topay for her sins.

ACT TWO
Buffyfinds Spike sitting staring at nothing. She tries to talk to him about Saria but he’s unresponsive until she mentions Dawn. Spike asks if she’s alright, and Buffy says she’s freaked but okay. Spike says if Buffy wants her to stay that way she’ll keep her away from him. Buffy rejoins that there’s nothing she’d like more, but that Dawn wants him to be part of her life, so he‘d better not hurt her. Spike starts to laugh hysterically, then tells her to sod off. Buffy goes to leave, but pauses to tell him that if she thought for a second he might or could actually hurt Dawn, there’s no place far enough that he could run to escape her, soul or no soul. She runsinto Clem outside bringing supplies and he tells her Spike’s starting to be like a hermit and he’s worried. He tells he’s going to get the vampire out of the crypt tonight and try to cheer him up. He then commentsthat Buffy looks tired...Buffy smiles and says she’s okay, but she’s gonna head home to take a nap.

Willow and Xander are waiting with solemn faces when Buffy gets home. They’ve found the book that had been on the floor, and tell her that Saria was apparently involved at some point with a vampire. Buffy asks if he was the one that turned her, and Willow says it’s not really big on the details, only that heloved her and apparently fought by her side. Buffy nods, asking if Dawn had come back down. Willow said she checked on her a while ago and she’d gone back to sleep. Buffy said she thought she’d do the same...she leaves her friends looking worried.

Dawn isn’t asleep...she’s in the shower, crying. She looks haunted...and has flashes of visions of the sired slayer that are the sane dream we see Buffy awake from. Buffy decides she’s had enough of this: it is time for action.

Spikeis in a bar talking with Clem. He saves a girl from a vampire. He then hears the girl's heartbeat and suddenly tries to bite her.

ACT THREE
Spike’s chip activates, preventing his attack. He has Clem take the girl to hospital.

Xander and Willow are talking...Xander asks Willow if she thinks that this Slayer loving vampire thing is inevitable. Willow answers she’s not really sure - she thought Buffy was kind of unique in this, but now who knows. Seeing Xander’s expression, she realizes he’s having more than friends feelings for Buffy and calls him on it. Xander says those feelings really never went away...but that doesn’t mean what he felt for Anya was any less real and he’s not sure he’s ready to have a relationship like that with Buffy.Worse, he’s not sure she’s ready...or that she’ll ever be ready. Dawn bursts in, agitated. Buffy’s gone, and she’s in trouble, she insists. Dawn gets a flash of Buffy running through the sewers and takes off. Willow tells Xander to get the weapons, but they‘ve lost her.

CHINA:Saria is in the jungle. She crouches down and picks up the scent of Lillith. She reaches a cave. On the floor she finds Lillith's symbol again, with her lover's necklace in it's centre. Saria clutches the necklace and runs back to the encampment. Saria sprints into the encampment.

Spikeis back in his crypt. He is in a foul mood and drinking. Dawn enters.Spike doesn't think she should be there. Dawn thinks Buffy is in danger; she wants Spike to help her find him. Spike starts going on about how Buffy doesn't deserve him. Dawn tells Spike to grow up. Spike pushes Dawn against the wall and screams in her face. Dawn is hurt, her arms scratched by his hands. Spike looks at theblood on his hands and starts apologizing. Dawn looks at the blood. She gets another flash of Buffy facing the sired slayer. She sees through Buffy's eyes as Buffy enters the vampire lair Spike destroyed and meets up with the sired slayer. Dawn comes out of it. Spike asks if she is okay. Dawn asks Spike where the lair is. Spike tells Dawn. Dawn walks out.

The sired slayer tells Buffy that Spike killed the people that wanted to bring back Lillith... Buffy says that is a good thing… evil vamps should stay dead… Saria says she won't rest till she kills the mother herself… Buffy freezes at the name… Saria takes the pause to knock Buffy down… Saria tells Buffy that as a slayer she shares the same blood as the mother…they are family so Buffy should be killed…

ACT FOUR
Buffysays she knows what a family is… she is not related to a vampire… ...Saria says in that Buffy is wrong… vampires, slayers, they are oneand the same… Saria say she will kill her in the same way too… Buffy says it'll never happen… Buffy kicks some ass…

…Dawn runs through the sewers and bursts in to the lair…Buffy and the sired slayer still fight. Buffy and Saria are panting as they face one another… Saria says that the return of the mother cannot be stopped… LILLITH will arise… and she needs to be the one to kill her… Buffy says you should let the dead stay dead… Saria says she killed everyone she loved… her family… Dawn speaks up: your lover. Saria gets really pissed off at hearing her lover's name and she screams at Dawn to leave him out of it.Buffy says it is true though… this is revenge… Buffy: If Lillith is dead that should be enough… yet it isn't for you. Buffy says how she lost people and it hurts but that is fate. You have to move on. Saria says she’s never known a love like the one she lost so she can’t understand.Buffy says it's not gonna happen. Saria looks up with fierce eyes and attacks Buffy again saying once Lillith is killed by her own hands she can find peace and join her lover in the afterlife.

Xander and Willow run into Clem. He tells them about the girl Spike saved, and they tell him that Buffy and Dawn might be in trouble, does he have any idea where this Saria might be hiding herself? Clem says he has no idea, but they should all stay out of it - much as he liked Dawn and Buffy, he didn’t like the idea of facing a vampire that was also a Slayer - they were almost always psycho...

Buffy says Lillith's followers are dead; she isn't coming back. Saria tells Buffy she is naive. The return of Lillith… the FIRST cannot be stopped. Dawn says prophecies can be wrong. Saria is surprised Buffy can't feel it. Buffy: feel what. The darkness… inside her… coming to the surface… as the moment of Lillith's return gets closer. Buffy gets pissed off and pins Saria down. Buffy says there is no darkness. Saria says "You think you know… what you are… what's to come… (you can't even comprehend thepower of the slayer and it's origins. The darkness that links the slayer and the vampire… the link blood heritage shared by slayer and beast…)"Buffy says you learn to control the darkness… that's what being a slayer is all about… Saria warns Buffy that Lillith is stronger than she'll ever know… and when she comprehends the link between them it might be a little harder to kill the mother after all. Buffy eventually stakes Saria. Buffy walks towards the exit and drops her stake. It clatters to the ground. Dawn watches the pile of dust in the middle of the floor before turning and walking after Buffy.

In Spike's crypt, Spike washes the blood of his hands. It won't come off. He starts scratching at his arms. Harder and harder. He draws blood. Spike is mesmerized by the blood.

CHINA:Saria finds the beaten body of her lover tied to a tree. They kiss. The lover looks up and Saria turns to see Lillith. Lillith and Saria get into a huge fight. Lots of slow motion inter-cuts. Eventually Lillith gets the upper hand. She pins Saria to the ground. Lillith: "Big sister will always win". Lillith bites Saria and then sires her. As Saria's body lies under the tree, in her dying moments she watches Lillith stride away and stake her lover. The camera moves in front of Lillith as we see Saria's body in the background, Lillith removes the dressings that covered her face to reveal THE FIRST SLAYER. Her face is blank.
